Karine Jean-Pierre “Americans have the right to peacefully protest. Forcibly taking over a building is not peaceful.” 11 hours ago
  • Janet Yellen
Janet Yellen “Treasury has consistently warned that companies will face significant consequences for providing material support for Russia's war, and the U.S. is imposing them today on almost 300 targets.” 11 hours ago
  • Catherine Russell
Catherine Russell “Over 200 days of war have already killed or maimed tens of thousands of children in Gaza. For hundreds of thousands of children in the border city of Rafah, there is added fear of an escalated military operation that would bring catastrophe on top of catastrophe for children. Nearly all of the some 600,000 children now crammed into Rafah are either injured, sick, malnourished, traumatised or living with disabilities.” 11 hours ago
  • Eric Adams
Eric Adams “We cannot allow what should be a lawful protest to turn into a violent spectacle that saves and serves no purpose. There's no place for acts of hate in our city. I want to continue to commend the professionalism of the police department and to thank Columbia University. It was a tough decision, we understood that. But with the very clear evidence of their observation and the clear evidence from our intelligence division, that they understood it was time to move and the action had to end and we brought it to a peaceful conclusion.” 20 hours ago
  • Sergei Shoigu
Sergei Shoigu “To maintain the required pace of the offensive … it is necessary to increase the volume and quality of weapons and military equipment supplied to the troops, primarily weapons.” 20 hours ago

“The Kim regime needs more sources of national pride and legitimacy than military parades. So the public commemorations around its founder's birthday tried to portray an economy that is not only resilient but growing, and a society that is not only united but also modern and happy. But this does not represent a shift away from North Korea's military build-up. Kim Jong-un's stated goal of deploying tactical nuclear weapons, Kim Yo-jong's recent threats toward Seoul, and satellite imagery of tunneling activity at Punggye-ri all point to an upcoming nuclear test. Additional missile launches are also expected for honing weapons delivery systems.”

“I would not say it is a particularly meaningful event. The SAC [State Affairs Commission] as an organization is pretty powerless, as is any organization chaired by the Supreme Leader, as no one can overrule him, so I think it is more of a pat on the back than an actual promotion. She [Kim Yo-jong] is even listed last on the rather long list of officials. This shakeup is probably not mainly about her.”

“With her official title as a SAC [State Affairs Commission] member, Kim Yo-Jong will be able to hold meetings with the South Korean unification minister or U.S. secretary of state.”

“After Kim Yo-jong's statement, North Korea appeared to be contemplating whether to resume regular communication with South Korea, or to test Seoul's willingness to act as it desires by launching a missile, and the regime chose the latter. It seems that the North is waiting for the moment when South Korea and the U.S. do not describe its missile launch as a threat or provocation. And such a moment could be a turning point for Pyongyang in resuming communication with Seoul and engaging in further activities for talks.”

“Kim Yo-jong's latest statements may be part of Pyongyang's efforts to continue baiting Seoul. Time is not on the Moon administration's side. Pyongyang is clearly aware of this - and the Moon administration has also worn its emotions on its sleeve by continuing to underscore the importance of inter-Korean reconciliation at nearly every possible opportunity... Through Seoul, Kim [Kim Jong-un] has an advocate that will not only go to bat for Pyongyang, but even take it upon itself to proactively and voluntarily push on behalf of the North Korean regime - without Kim's prodding. The Kim regime does not really have to do much, because the heavy lifting appears to be done by Seoul.”

“Staging a strong provocation is spoiling the mood. In her comment, Kim Yo-jong said the drills may become a prelude that undermines inter-Korean relations, and didn't mention an immediate military response or the severance of talks. In the past, the North conducted military exercises in response to Seoul-Washington joint drills, but that happened when the two sides were having live training. A military provocation against this summer's exercises will trigger international criticism and result in the U.S. turning to a hardline approach. Pyongyang's food and other internal affairs are also causing difficulties. Given this, the North is anticipated to denounce the drills in a very restrained manner.”

“Kim Yo-jong knows that the militaries of South Korea and the U.S. will carry out the joint exercises as planned starting mid-August. But what she intended through her statement was to bring about internal conflict among South Korean politicians.”

“North Korea usually makes it clear what actions it will take against hostility toward the country, but it did not elaborate this time. The whole message is directed toward the U.S. on the occasion of the planned arrival of Blinken and Austin [in South Korea]. The North is taking a wait-and-see approach toward the U.S. which is currently conducting a policy review of the North. In addition, the Kim [Kim Yo-jong] statement is a message to locals there given that it was published in the Rodong Sinmun, Tuesday. During the party congress, the North Korean leader proclaimed his opposition to the joint exercise and its citizens are also aware of it, so they had no choice but to mention the training.”

“She [Kim Yo-jong North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's sister] comes in and out of prominence and her title tends not to match her importance. She is a confidant and image consultant for her brother as well as a trusted pair of eyes and ears embedded in the North Korean elite.”
