  • Rina Shah
Rina Shah “Protests in US universities are a display of democracy in action, a welcome sight in an election year marked by concerns of voter apathy chiefly due to Israel's war on Gaza. So when I see a movement like this of students taking peaceful, non-violent action and expressing their concern about the US government backing of Israel, of where our tax money is going, I think that's extremely healthy. These students are out there concerned about America's role in backing Benjamin Netanyahu. On the one hand, we are supplying weapons and funds to do what he wants to do in Gaza, while on the other we are sending humanitarian aid to Gaza. This is the hypocrisy these students are concerned about.” 6 hours ago
  • Thomas Friedman
Thomas Friedman “But revenge is not a strategy. It is pure insanity that Israel is now more than six months into this war and the Israeli military leadership - and virtually the entire political class - has allowed Netanyahu to continue to pursue a 'total victory' there, including probably soon plunging deep into Rafah, without any exit plan or Arab partner lined up to step in once the war ends. If Israel ends up with an indefinite occupation of both Gaza and the West Bank, it would be a toxic military, economic and moral overstretch that would delight Israel's most dangerous foe, Iran, and repel all its allies in the West and the Arab world.” 6 hours ago
  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy
Volodymyr Zelenskiy “Of course, I'm grateful to all of our partners who have helped us with air defence: each air defence system and each air defence missile is literally saving lives. It's important that everything works out as quickly as possible: every new agreement with our partners to strengthen our air defence, every initiative from Ukraine's friends to help us, particularly with finding and supplying Patriot [anti-aircraft missile systems]. Ukraine needs at least seven [Patriot] systems. Our partners have these Patriots. Russian terrorists can see that unfortunately our partners aren't as determined to protect Europe from terror as they are to do so in the Middle East. But [our partners] can give us the air defence systems that we need. We mustn't waste time: we need to signal determination.” 10 hours ago
  • Antony Blinken
Antony Blinken “I saw that Huawei just put out a new laptop that it boasted was AI capable, that uses an Intel chip. I think it demonstrates that what we're focused on is only the most sensitive technology that could pose a threat to our security. We're not focused on cutting off trade, or for that matter containing or holding back China.” 15 hours ago

“They are local staff arrested in a security operation in Addis Ababa. This security operation was started as soon as the state of emergency was declared by Ethiopia's cabinet. Many people have been arrested across the capital; these UN workers were arrested in the course of that operation.”

“We clearly condemned the previous expulsion of UN officials from Ethiopia, and if confirmed, we would similarly condemn arrests of UN staff members based on ethnicity. We understand from reports… that those arrested are Tigrayan. Ethiopian government security force harassment and detention on the basis of of ethnicity is completely unacceptable.”

“We take this opportunity to invite the United Nations in general and the so-called friendly countries of Haiti, in particular the United States of America, to register in this page of history as loyal allies who want the well-being of the Haitian people by divorcing the status quo.”

“A large number of headquarters of international organizations are based in Europe and Europe has a bigger say in the U.N., so we need to gain support from European countries. Under the circumstances, the unification minister's visit is also aimed at explaining the government's Korean Peninsula peace process from its perspective to the European nations. The Europe tour can provide an indication that the Moon administration is working hard on talks and cooperation with North Korea, which is significant.”

“The US is trying to create 'one China' and 'one Taiwan' in the UN and turn such a trick into a long-term bargaining chip to pressure Beijing. This is a new offensive against China. The world can see this, and Blinken's rhetoric will not deceive the international community. Taiwan's practical communication with UN agencies on civil aviation and public health matters has never been an obstacle. What the US wants now is exactly a political breakthrough. They think the whole world is stupid!”

“Taiwan's meaningful participation in the UN system is not a political issue, but a pragmatic one. That is why we encourage all UN member states to join us in supporting Taiwan's robust, meaningful participation throughout the UN system and in the international community.”

“Resolution 2758 does not say Taiwan is a part of China. It does not say China may represent Taiwan before the UN. It does not address Taiwan's sovereignty - it doesn't even include the word Taiwan.”

“A key difference between Taiwan now and when it lost its seat is that in practice it is also no longer claiming to represent territorial China. That's the big difference that's from the world in 1971 when the ROC [Republic of China] did claim it was going to be the legitimate government for all of China. It's hard to remember the world in that context - but that's also why there was very little sympathy for ROC at that time because it seemed like they were making implausibly ridiculous claims and excluding one billion people from the UN.”

“The PRC [People's Republic of China] government has, as a practical matter, been effective in blocking Taiwan's participation in UN-affiliated entities, but this is not dictated by Resolution 2758: the resolution is about representation, not participation. Meaningful engagement by Taiwan in UN-affiliated entities is consistent with the letter and spirit of Resolution 2758.”

“I condemn the ongoing military coup in Sudan. Prime Minister Hamdok [Abdalla Hamdok] & all other officials must be released immediately. There must be full respect for the constitutional charter to protect the hard-won political transition. The UN will continue to stand with the people of Sudan.”

“Abiy Ahmed's Air Force did once again strike non-military targets around MU campus. While this is not outrageous enough, a UN Aircraft had to abort its landing because of the air strike. Our air defense units knew the UN plane was scheduled to land and it was due in large measure to their restraint it was not caught in a crossfire. What begs the question however is the government cleared the UN plane to fly to #Mekelle only to send its fighter jet in time to raid civilian targets. While the use of the UN flight as a distraction couldn't be ruled out, it is not entirely implausible to suspect that the Smart Alecs in Addis were indeed setting up the UN plane to be hit by our guns. The fact that the plane that came today was denied permit yesterday couldn't be a mere coincidence. Abiy's moves beg for action!”

“The People's Republic of China [PRC] has misused Resolution 2758 to prevent Taiwan's meaningful participation. Taiwan's exclusion from UN activities creates an immense cost to the nation, as well as the bloc's members. Beijing is denying the international community the ability to gain valuable contributions that Taiwan offers.”

“What the leader of the People's Republic of China have been saying you might have noticed that in one of the latest speeches where I have personally been present that was an international event in the framework of the UN where I've been present and I remember that president Xi [Xi Jinping] was saying that the People's Republic of China has no plans to use military power to resolve any type of problems or conflicts that was more or less his statement that's the first thing I wanted to say. Secondly as far as I understand the Chinese philosophy regarding the philosophy of statehood and state management it does not include use of force and thirdly I think China does not need to use force. China is a huge powerful economy and in terms of purchasing parity China is the economy number one in the world ahead of the United States now. And by increasing this economic potential China is capable of implementing its national objectives.”

“As the largest developing country, a permanent member of the Security Council, and the second-largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping budget, China is always highly responsible and pays its dues promptly. The current financial situation of the UN is still worrying, and arrears of membership dues and peacekeeping assessments by some member states are one of the main reasons. Multilateralism should be practiced, not stated. Relevant countries should pay UN dues and various assessments in a timely, full and unconditional manner to ensure the normal operation of the UN and fulfill its commitment to multilateralism with practical actions.”

“The UNSC [U.N. Security Council] ... put on the table the issue pertaining to the DPRK's exercise of sovereignty. This means an open ignorance of and wanton encroachment on the sovereignty of the DPRK and a serious intolerable provocation against it. This is a denial of impartiality, objectivity and equilibrium, lifelines of the UN activities, and an evident manifestation of double-dealing standard. North Korea has never acknowledged the partial and illegal U.N. 'resolution' that seriously encroaches upon the right to existence and development of sovereign states. I express strong concerns over the fact that the UNSC amused itself with the dangerous 'time-bomb' this time. The weapons tests have never posed any threats or harm to the security of the neighboring countries.”

“The Americans tried to contact us through different channels (at the U.N. General Assembly) in New York, and I told the mediators if America's intentions are serious then a serious indication was needed ... by releasing at least $10 billion of blocked money. They are not willing to free $10 billion belonging to the Iranian nation so that we can say that the Americans once in the past several decades considered the interests of the Iranian nation.”
