Emmanuel Macron “If the Russians were to break through the front lines, if there were a Ukrainian request [of sending ground troops to Ukraine], which is not the case today, we would legitimately have to ask ourselves this question.” 19 hours ago
  • David Cameron
David Cameron “We will give three billion pounds every year for as long as is necessary. We've just really emptied all we can in terms of giving equipment. The aid package was the largest from the UK so far. Some of that (equipment) is actually arriving in Ukraine today, while I'm here. Ukraine has a right to use the weapons provided by London to strike targets inside Russia, and that it was up to Kyiv whether to do so. Ukraine has that right. Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it's defending itself.” 19 hours ago

“We are mobilising one of Europe's biggest ever common firefighting operations as multiple fires affect several countries simultaneously. This shows the need to prioritise crisis response also at European level. The EU stands in full solidarity with Greece, North Macedonia, Albania, Italy and Turkey, at this difficult time. I am very thankful to all the countries who have offered help for their tangible solidarity. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with the first responders who are risking their lives to battle the fires.”

“We have deep disagreements [with Turkish President Erdogan], and we know it. We have had controversies sometimes, and we accept them. But no matter what the disagreements, we always have to talk. We both wanted it. I think it's a good thing. We need to see each other and engage in dialogue.”

“We strongly recommend that our Turkish colleagues carefully analyse the situation and stop fuelling Kyiv's militaristic sentiment. We hope Ankara will adjust its line based on our legitimate concerns.”

“If Plan A [EU membership for Balkan states] does not work, which lost credibility [for the EU], you have Plan B, the non-papers are on the table. Everyone is saying they don't agree with the papers but everyone who has been dealing with the Balkans knows that there is quite a number of people around these papers. It is not that Russia, Turkey and others are strong actors in the Balkans but if the EU becomes weaker, others can become stronger by definition without being particularly strong.”

“When the Rafale [fighter jet] enter service in a few months, Turkey will have a serious problem in the balance of power vis-a-vis Greece. And if the Americans embargo spare parts for their existing F-16s, then the problem will become extremely serious, at least for the medium term. If it [Turkey] buys Sukhoi it will be a much more decisive step away from the Western architecture than the S-400 purchase … We are at the start of a Cold War. Turkey's move may be an irreversible rift with the West.”

“I am the first woman to be president of the European Commission. I am the president of the European Commission, and this is how I expected to be treated when visiting Turkey two weeks ago. Like a commission president, but I was not. I felt hurt, and I felt alone, as a woman, and as a European. Because it is not about seating arrangements or protocol. This goes to the core of who we are.”

“Joe Biden thinks that this is a politically savvy move. He understands that it will certainly fit in with his argument that human rights are worth protecting, and he felt that you have to make a statement when something like this happens so that you can prevent genocide again in the future.”

“Each year on this day, we remember the lives of all those who died in the Ottoman-era Armenian genocide and recommit ourselves to preventing such an atrocity from ever again occurring. The American people honor all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today.”

“The relationship has been tilted towards Russia because Turkish goods are easier to replace for Russia than Russian imports for Turkey. That has changed significantly in the last two or three years based on developments in the natural gas market that Turkey has taken advantage of strategically, becoming a transit territory of gas not just from Russia but also Azerbaijan. Turkey has also built LNG [liquefied natural gas] terminals and is importing a lot of LNG, which has increased its position vis-a-vis Russia. Russia can't afford to lose Turkey either as a transit territory or a market for gas. Turkey sees that and is able to extract benefits from it.”

“There's a close defence partnership that Turkey has cultivated with Ukraine in the last five to six years, which is really important to the Ukraine. But Russia considers [the eastern Ukrainian region of] Donbas a part of Greater Russia, it's right on the border. In the mindset of Putin, Ukraine represents a much more important space. That means he's going to be more aggressive in defending what he considers his sovereign rights.”

“I was very displeased by the humiliation that President von der Leyen had to suffer. It's that with these - let's call them what they are - dictators, of whom, however, one has need, one must be frank in expressing differences of views, opinions, behavior, of visions of society....but also ready to collaborate, more to cooperate, to cooperate to ensure the interests of one's country.”

“We assess that Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey to capture or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. We base this assessment on the Crown Prince's control of decisionmaking in the Kingdom, the direct involvement of a key adviser and members of Muhammad bin Salman's protective detail in the operation, and the Crown Prince's support for using violent measures to silence dissidents abroad, including Khashoggi.”

“I would expect the secretary and his Turkish counterpart will have an opportunity to chat, to connect in the coming days. Russian S-400s are incompatible with NATO equipment, they threaten the security of NATO technology, and they're inconsistent with Turkey's commitments as a NATO ally. Turkey is a long-standing and valued NATO ally ... We seek cooperation on common priorities, and as with any ally, we engage in dialogue to address disagreements.”

“We call on all external parties, to include Russia, Turkey and the UAE, to respect Libyan sovereignty and immediately cease all military intervention in Libya. Per the October ceasefire agreement, we call on Turkey and Russia to immediately initiate the withdrawal of their forces from the country and the removal of the foreign mercenaries and military proxies that they have recruited, financed, deployed and supported in Libya.”

“Today’s deal delivers vital certainty for business and supports thousands of jobs across the UK in the manufacturing, automotive and steel industries. It paves the way for a new, more ambitious deal with Turkey in the near future, and is part of our plan to put the UK at the centre of a network of modern agreements with dynamic economies.”

“Relations between Russia and Turkey are self-sustainable and self-sufficient, they don’t depend on someone’s aggressive and hostile actions and whims. They [their relations] are based on the national interests of each of our countries and on our determination to continue mutual cooperation and mutual benefit by searching for a balance of interests.”

“I think we are at one minute to midnight as far as a conflict with Turkey is concerned. France sees that if Turkey wins influence over Greece and Cyprus, then Turkey will become the major power in the East Mediterranean, pushing Egypt and Israel to the sidelines and forcing them into an alliance. If it succeeds, the East Mediterranean will become a Turkish lake. Israel’s new relationship with Arab nations… permits the creation of a bridge of countries starting in France, passing through Greece and Cyprus, going to Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and reaching India. A barrier against the dangerous network Turkey is trying to create with Pakistan and Turkic nations.”

“Germany has worked hard to facilitate a dialogue between the European Union and Turkey over the past months. But there have been too many provocations, and tensions between Turkey, Cyprus and Greece have prevented any direct talks. For this reason, we will talk about what consequences we should draw – also with a view to the EU summit this week.”

“I really fail to understand Germany’s reluctance to use the enormous power of its economy to set a clear example to countries that they must obey international law. I understand the financial issue, but I am sure Germany also understands the huge contradiction of providing offensive weapons to a country that threatens the peace and stability of two EU countries. This is the definition of the word contradiction.”
