  • Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin Netanyahu “But while Israel has shown willingness, Hamas remains entrenched in its extreme positions, first among them the demand to remove all our forces from the Gaza Strip, end the war, and leave Hamas in power. Israel cannot accept that.” 6 hours ago
  • Bernard Smith
Bernard Smith “I know my colleagues who were working out of occupied East Jerusalem have now stopped working out of there, and both Arabic and English channels have stopped broadcasting from there. The reason that those of us here in Ramallah and Gaza are still operating is because this is the occupied Palestinian territories. The Cabinet decision applies in Israel and Israel's domestic territory. To close Al Jazeera's operations in this part of the occupied West Bank, a military order from the governor would be required. That hasn't come yet. The network might be looking at some legal appeal, but it's a 45-day closure for now. It could be extended again, but it gives the Israeli authorities the right to seize Al Jazeera's broadcasting equipment and cut the channel from cable and satellite broadcasters. We know that's already happened in the last couple of hours in Israel; any operators that have been broadcasting Al Jazeera English or Arabic now have a sign on their screens saying they're no longer allowed to transmit and receive Al Jazeera.” 6 hours ago
  • Omar Shakir
Omar Shakir “Their [Al Jazeera] offices have been bombed in Gaza. Their staff have been beaten in the West Bank. They've been killed in the West Bank and Gaza. Rather than trying to silence reporting on its atrocities in Gaza, Israel should stop committing them.” 6 hours ago

“The decision by Saudi Arabia and the UAE [United Arab Emirates] to summon their ambassadors from Lebanon is a reminder that despite the broader atmosphere of de-escalation in the region, red lines have not changed. Both states view the Houthis as an arm of Iranian influence in Yemen, and are not willing to tolerate clear expressions of support for the group from the Lebanese state, nor are they unwilling to take action when they see Lebanon straying too far away from their sphere of influence.”

“This is not a regime with whom we should consider re-establishing diplomatic relations. The recent rapprochement by the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar is something that we should approach with a great deal of concern. There can be no peace, stability or reconciliation without a process aimed at justice and accountability. We have failed the Syrian people over the past decade. Let us not paper over the cracks of instability and injustice with a final act of abandonment.”

“Perceptions matter whether or not they're rooted in a cold, cold reality. And the perception is very clear that the US is not as committed to the Gulf as it used to be in the views of many people in decision-making authority in the region. From the Saudi point of view, they now see Obama, Trump and Biden - three successive presidents - taking decisions that signify to some extent an abandonment. I think we saw in Biden's statements on Afghanistan, the way he said things that he's clearly going to put US interests first and obviously that came as quite a disappointment to partners and allies around the world who maybe hoped for something different after Trump. He sounds quite similar to an 'America First' approach, just sort of a different tone.”

“There's been a lot of work behind the scenes to try to build the foundation of something much more significant between the Saudis and Omanis. Sultan Haitham is viewed in Riyadh as leaning toward Saudi in terms of Gulf affairs.”

“The potential U.S.-Iran detente, the energy transition, and competition in non-oil diversification makes for a particularly challenging period of divergence [between United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia] this time round.”

“We are concerned by reports that Saudi aid worker Abdulrahman al-Sadhan was given a 20-year prison sentence and travel ban, pending appeal, after being held with limited contact with family for three years. Exercising human rights should never be a punishable offense.”

“The Houthis are saying that they are responding to the latest escalation in the area with intense Saudi-led coalition strikes targeting Houthi positions in Sanaa. At the same time, by the end of this month, we will be commemorating the sixth anniversary of the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis. The attack yesterday, deeper into Saudi Arabia, targeting vital refineries … is a message by the Houthis that they are far from being defeated and that they will continue to gain ground and expand their military influence.”

“This is a test of our humanity. If the United States of America truly supports freedom of expression, democracy and human rights, there is no reason not to sanction Mohammed bin Salman - a man our own intelligence found to have approved the murder of U.S. resident and Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.”

“Thank you, Joe Biden, for transparency about Jamal Khashoggi's murder. Now we need sanctions on the Saudi prince responsible. The DNI's [US Office of the Director of National Intelligence] report today confirms what we have long known to be true: Mohammed Bin Salman ordered the execution of Jamal Khashoggi. President Biden should now fulfil his promise to hold MBS [Mohammed Bin Salman] accountable for this murder by, at minimum, imposing the same sanctions on him as those imposed on his underling culprits and ending the weapons transfers to Saudi Arabia that would be controlled by an unelected, brutal murderer. The release of the DNI report is only a small part of the evidence we're seeking from the US government about the murder of Khashoggi, including regarding US officials close to MBS who potentially facilitated a cover-up.”

“The United States government must re-evaluate and recalibrate the relationship with Saudi Arabia, given the findings of this report, which are part of a disturbing pattern of human rights abuses from the Kingdom. The United States Congress stands with President Biden in promoting transparency relating to human rights abuses and in supporting partnerships that advance our security, uphold our values and protect our interests. We support the steps being taken by the Administration to hold Saudi Arabia accountable, including related to Global Magnitsky and visa denials for human rights abusers.”

“The administration is trying to portray this first military attack as measured. Biden spoke to the Iraqi prime minister earlier this week. Importantly he spoke to the King of Saudi Arabia today. The rocket attacks that US administration is saying were perpetrated, were not only in Iraq. There are reports that they were in Saudi Arabia as well. The call included a determination to protect Saudi Arabia from external threats.”

“We assess that Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey to capture or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. We base this assessment on the Crown Prince's control of decisionmaking in the Kingdom, the direct involvement of a key adviser and members of Muhammad bin Salman's protective detail in the operation, and the Crown Prince's support for using violent measures to silence dissidents abroad, including Khashoggi.”
