  • Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin Netanyahu “But while Israel has shown willingness, Hamas remains entrenched in its extreme positions, first among them the demand to remove all our forces from the Gaza Strip, end the war, and leave Hamas in power. Israel cannot accept that.” 2 hours ago
  • Bernard Smith
Bernard Smith “I know my colleagues who were working out of occupied East Jerusalem have now stopped working out of there, and both Arabic and English channels have stopped broadcasting from there. The reason that those of us here in Ramallah and Gaza are still operating is because this is the occupied Palestinian territories. The Cabinet decision applies in Israel and Israel's domestic territory. To close Al Jazeera's operations in this part of the occupied West Bank, a military order from the governor would be required. That hasn't come yet. The network might be looking at some legal appeal, but it's a 45-day closure for now. It could be extended again, but it gives the Israeli authorities the right to seize Al Jazeera's broadcasting equipment and cut the channel from cable and satellite broadcasters. We know that's already happened in the last couple of hours in Israel; any operators that have been broadcasting Al Jazeera English or Arabic now have a sign on their screens saying they're no longer allowed to transmit and receive Al Jazeera.” 2 hours ago
  • Omar Shakir
Omar Shakir “Their [Al Jazeera] offices have been bombed in Gaza. Their staff have been beaten in the West Bank. They've been killed in the West Bank and Gaza. Rather than trying to silence reporting on its atrocities in Gaza, Israel should stop committing them.” 2 hours ago

“The visit by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the UAE, which comes after the visit by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the Turkish republic, opens a new, positive page in bilateral relations between the two countries and is in harmony with the UAE's efforts to build stronger communication and cooperation bridges that aim towards a stable, flourishing region.”

“Politics is for serving the citizens and solving the problems of citizens. Unfortunately, the palace [of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan] forgot both the citizens and their problems. Citizens are imprisoned by poverty. The government continuously increases prices of almost everything, including electricity, gas, petroleum, taxes and fees. The high cost of living is making citizens poorer.”

“I don't think he [Recep Tayyip Erdogan] has the confidence of the nation anymore. There's an urgent problem of deepening poverty and the wheels of the economy are coming to a standstill.”

“The opposition seems to have the momentum on their side. One way or another, they convinced a large section of society that Erdogan is not a lifetime president and could be gone in 2023. That Turks are now discussing the possibility of a post-Erdogan Turkey is quite remarkable.”

“We have deep disagreements [with Turkish President Erdogan], and we know it. We have had controversies sometimes, and we accept them. But no matter what the disagreements, we always have to talk. We both wanted it. I think it's a good thing. We need to see each other and engage in dialogue.”

“It is not only the progress of the country’s EU accession process that pays the price, but also the very idea of Europe. To justify its own failures and the raison d’etre (in power), the government fuels Euroscepticism among Albanians by blaming the internal politics of EU Member States and their allegedly anti-Albanian press, thus following pretty much the example of other populist leaders such as former Macedonian PM N. Gruevski, Hungary’s V. Orban, Turkey’s President Erdogan and other autocrats.”

“The AKP's grassroots are shrinking in size and Erdogan is becoming more vulnerable to demands from its own core voters. Religious orders and religious communities are increasingly more effective in shaping the AKP’s agenda because the AKP addresses now a smaller voting base. The move [of reverting the Hagia Sophia into a mosque]itself is a confirmation that the government is desperate.”
