  • Karine Jean-Pierre
Karine Jean-Pierre “Americans have the right to peacefully protest. Forcibly taking over a building is not peaceful.” 9 hours ago
  • Janet Yellen
Janet Yellen “Treasury has consistently warned that companies will face significant consequences for providing material support for Russia's war, and the U.S. is imposing them today on almost 300 targets.” 9 hours ago
  • Catherine Russell
Catherine Russell “Over 200 days of war have already killed or maimed tens of thousands of children in Gaza. For hundreds of thousands of children in the border city of Rafah, there is added fear of an escalated military operation that would bring catastrophe on top of catastrophe for children. Nearly all of the some 600,000 children now crammed into Rafah are either injured, sick, malnourished, traumatised or living with disabilities.” 9 hours ago
  • Eric Adams
Eric Adams “We cannot allow what should be a lawful protest to turn into a violent spectacle that saves and serves no purpose. There's no place for acts of hate in our city. I want to continue to commend the professionalism of the police department and to thank Columbia University. It was a tough decision, we understood that. But with the very clear evidence of their observation and the clear evidence from our intelligence division, that they understood it was time to move and the action had to end and we brought it to a peaceful conclusion.” 17 hours ago
  • Sergei Shoigu
Sergei Shoigu “To maintain the required pace of the offensive … it is necessary to increase the volume and quality of weapons and military equipment supplied to the troops, primarily weapons.” 18 hours ago

“Israel and Hamas remain far apart in negotiations for a new deal to reach a truce in Gaza. I think that it's hard to square Israel's endgame. Their objective remains trying to finish off Hamas, which the US has said is impossible. Effectively, what this means is that they want to continue to bomb Gaza and further destroy it, even though they've already destroyed most of it. Hamas, on the other hand, wants a permanent ceasefire. So how do you square those two opposing aims and conditions? That's the problem right now. US is pushing hard for a deal before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. I don't think the Israelis care so much about Ramadan. Last year, Israel was beating Palestinian worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound with batons. But I think the US understands that they're going to look really bad if Israel is systematically preventing aid and bombing Palestinians during the Muslim holy month, and that's why I think they're ramping up pressure.”

“Only more pressure on Hamas in Ramadan will force them to kneel and release the Israeli captives. We must not allow Hamas to choose who is released from among our abductors, and the demand must be the release of all abductees.”

“Ramadan is coming up, and there's been an agreement by the Israelis that they would not engage in activities during Ramadan, as well, in order to give us time to get all the hostages out.”

“Israeli government is still unclear on the type of restrictions it will take in the Muslim holy month against worshippers trying to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque. It's due to pressure from the more right-wing ministers who are calling for matters to be resolved with a firm hand. But the army knows that Ramadan is a powder keg that can lead to an explosive situation, especially with the ongoing war in Gaza. Netanyahu is looking to side with Smotrich and Ben-Gvir, who don't want to see any restrictions lifted during Ramadan, while the military is concerned about things spilling over in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.”

“I think it's a second wave. In our country, it started earlier because of our big Muslim community, which celebrated Ramadan [in late April and May] … After that, big numbers started to appear. We could do nothing more, because we are a democratic party and our constitution mentions that there are freedoms that cannot be controlled even during war or emergency. One of these is freedom of religion.”
