If Biden wants to prevent North Korea from acting out, he needs to first provide the government with new incentives to talk-and that means new restrictions Washington can use as carrots. Biden, in other words, needs to take North Korean policy off autopilot and launch a proactive effort to deter Pyongyang. Otherwise, he risks encouraging an already emboldened Kim to stage a major provocation.” 14 hours ago

Christopher Cavoli “Russians don't have the numbers necessary to do a strategic breakthrough. More to the point, they don't have the skill and capability to do it, to operate at the scale necessary to exploit any breakthrough to strategic advantage. They do have the ability to make local advances and they have done some of that.” 15 hours ago

Volodymyr Zelenskiy “The situation in the Kharkiv region is generally under control, and our soldiers are inflicting significant losses on the occupier. However, the area remains extremely difficult.” 20 hours ago

“The Pandora Papers must be a wake-up call for EU finance ministers. Unfortunately, a grotesque picture is emerging at the meeting of EU finance ministers: while journalists publish the biggest tax leak ever, EU finance ministers are weakening their list of tax havens. In view of flourishing tax havens, it is absurd that the finance ministers are shortening the tax haven list. The EU list of tax havens is hardly any good in the fight against tax evasion. The list is piecemeal, with a number of important tax havens missing. The PandoraPapers show that billionaires and powerful people use many tax havens that are not on the EU list. Two-thirds of the shell companies in the Pandora files are in the British Virgin Islands, which are missing from the EU tax haven list.”

“This is another shocking exposé of the oceans of money sloshing around the darkness of the world's tax havens that must prompt immediate action, as has long been promised. Bravo to the whistleblowers and journalists for shining a light into this secret parallel system of capital, one open only to those with fat amounts of money and the greed to hoard it all untaxed, and those who facilitate it. This is where our missing hospitals are. This is where the pay-packets sit of all the extra teachers and firefighters and public servants we need. Whenever a politician or business leader claims there is 'no money' to pay for climate damage and innovation, for more and better jobs, for a fair post-COVID recovery, for more overseas aid, they know where to look.”

“We didn't see anything on hidden wealth within Putin's inner circle. If there are serious publications, that are based on something concrete and refer to something specific, then we will read them with interest.”

“This [Pandora papers] is the Panama papers on steroids. It's broader, richer and has more detail. This is money [$11.3tn held offshore] that is being lost to treasuries around the world and money that could be used to recover from Covid. We're losing out because some people are gaining. It's as simple as that. It's a very simple transaction that's going on here.”
