  • Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin Netanyahu “But while Israel has shown willingness, Hamas remains entrenched in its extreme positions, first among them the demand to remove all our forces from the Gaza Strip, end the war, and leave Hamas in power. Israel cannot accept that.” 23 hours ago
  • Bernard Smith
Bernard Smith “I know my colleagues who were working out of occupied East Jerusalem have now stopped working out of there, and both Arabic and English channels have stopped broadcasting from there. The reason that those of us here in Ramallah and Gaza are still operating is because this is the occupied Palestinian territories. The Cabinet decision applies in Israel and Israel's domestic territory. To close Al Jazeera's operations in this part of the occupied West Bank, a military order from the governor would be required. That hasn't come yet. The network might be looking at some legal appeal, but it's a 45-day closure for now. It could be extended again, but it gives the Israeli authorities the right to seize Al Jazeera's broadcasting equipment and cut the channel from cable and satellite broadcasters. We know that's already happened in the last couple of hours in Israel; any operators that have been broadcasting Al Jazeera English or Arabic now have a sign on their screens saying they're no longer allowed to transmit and receive Al Jazeera.” 23 hours ago
  • Omar Shakir
Omar Shakir “Their [Al Jazeera] offices have been bombed in Gaza. Their staff have been beaten in the West Bank. They've been killed in the West Bank and Gaza. Rather than trying to silence reporting on its atrocities in Gaza, Israel should stop committing them.” 23 hours ago

“The West Bank is already in crisis. Yet settler violence and settlement-related violations have reached shocking new levels, and risk eliminating any practical possibility of establishing a viable Palestinian state.”

“A peace deal between Israel and Hamas will only be reached through direct negotiations between the parties. Israel outright rejects international dictates regarding a permanent settlement with the Palestinians. Israel will continue to oppose the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. Such recognition in the wake of the October 7 massacre would give a huge reward to unprecedented terrorism and prevent any future peace settlement.”

“We will in no way agree to this plan, which says Palestinians deserve a prize for the terrible massacre they carried out against us: a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. A Palestinian state is an existential threat to the State of Israel as was proven on Oct. 7.”

“We agree that regional peace includes peace for Israel, but that could only happen through peace for the Palestinians through a Palestinian state... There is a pathway towards a much better future for the region, for the Palestinians, and for Israel, that is peace, and we are fully committed to that... a ceasefire on all sides should be a starting point for permanent sustainable peace, which can only happen through justice to the Palestinian people.”

“They [Arab allies - Jordan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia] wanted integration with Israel - also a long-term Israeli aim - but only if that included a practical pathway to a Palestinian state. I think there are actually real opportunities. But we have to ... ensure that October 7 can never happen again and work to build a much different and much better future.”

“We said that we are ready for this state to be demilitarised, and there can also be guarantees of forces, whether NATO forces, United Nations forces, or Arab or American forces, until we achieve security for both states, the nascent Palestinian state and the Israeli state. A political resolution which calls for a Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, has remained out of reach.”

“He [Naftali Bennett] has made it very clear before he left his country that he's against a two-state solution; he's against a Palestinian state; he's against freezing settlements - three issues that are part and parcel of the core of the Biden approach to the Palestinians. Some people were hoping that during this visit there would be some serious give and take. But again, Afghanistan came to the rescue, and the agenda shifted; it was diluted.”
