If Biden wants to prevent North Korea from acting out, he needs to first provide the government with new incentives to talk-and that means new restrictions Washington can use as carrots. Biden, in other words, needs to take North Korean policy off autopilot and launch a proactive effort to deter Pyongyang. Otherwise, he risks encouraging an already emboldened Kim to stage a major provocation.” 9 hours ago

Christopher Cavoli “Russians don't have the numbers necessary to do a strategic breakthrough. More to the point, they don't have the skill and capability to do it, to operate at the scale necessary to exploit any breakthrough to strategic advantage. They do have the ability to make local advances and they have done some of that.” 10 hours ago

“Families, the basis of our societies, are under attack by Western liberal forces, but we will not give in. Western civilisation cannot sustain itself. But some do not even see it as a problem; some believe automatisation will solve all our problems while others want to settle migrants as the new working class of Europe. But you cannot change the identity of 1,000-year-old civilisations.”

“The news, which we have feared would come for weeks now, came today. Everybody who knows what happens at the border knew that these cruel practices will eventually lead to the loss of life. It's getting colder by the day. In the area where a state of emergency was declared, there is no control over the actions of the authorities. There will be more deaths. But we might not learn about all of them.”

“We are working around the clock to expeditiously move migrants out of the heat, elements and from underneath this bridge to our processing facilities in order to quickly process and remove individuals from the United States consistent with our laws and our policies.”

“I've had a very open discussion with President Erdogan, and I think we agreed that it is important to keep potential refugees and migrants as close to their home country as possible. It made sense for the EU supporting Turkey to help address the issue.”

“The Greek government has emerged with the notion of refugees and migrants as a 'hybrid threat', while testimonies of the inhuman practice of pushbacks against vulnerable people fleeing war and harsh circumstances have increased. It is certain that in the near future Greece will receive refugee flows from Afghanistan. The stand we take towards them is crucial and will define the identity of the Greek government on the aspect of human rights.”

“Joe Biden created this crisis [record number of migrants apprehended along the United States's southern border with Mexico]. The child abuse and neglect that's going on – it's not just the 20-plus day treks that some of these young kids are taking, 10 years old in many cases – over a third of the girls are being sexually assaulted or raped along the journey. Then, they get to the United States and you’ve seen how they’re being treated: not given proper food and shelter, being, you know, put next to somebody [less than] six inches apart with COVID.”

“The readmission process needs to be speeded up and simplified … Bosnia is ready to be a partner in the control of migration but it cannot be a hostage of the migrant crisis and a dormitory for migrants.”

“The crisis in Honduras is a permanent crisis. It does not come in waves. It is a spiralling crisis. Although the government says people are not alone [after hurricanes Eta and Iota], the truth is that the population has been alone. It was largely people helping other people out. The mud is still there, and it cannot just be removed with a shovel. Heavy equipment is needed.”

“The inability of the authorities to implement decisions and fulfill their obligations negatively affects the image of Bosnia and Herzegovina internationally and could also affect the country’s European aspirations.”

“It is very important to stick to our policy that we do not want to accept migrants on the territory of Republika Srpska. Migrants are not Bosnia’s problem, but that of the EU, and it should take full responsibility for that problem.”

“Accommodation is available to house most of the people currently sleeping rough in bitterly cold temperatures in Bosnia and Herzegovina. What is lacking is the political will to make that happen. The authorities at all levels must immediately provide suitable shelter and assistance to those in need. The EU’s responsibility is clear – the current humanitarian crisis is also a consequence of EU’s policy of fortifying its borders that has left thousands of people stranded on its periphery or in the neighbouring countries.”

“The situation in Una Sana canton is unacceptable. Winter-proof accommodation is a pre-requisite for humane living conditions, which need to be ensured at all times. Local authorities need to make existing facilities available and provide a temporary solution until Lipa camp is rebuilt into a permanent facility. We urge the authorities not to leave people out in the cold, without access to sanitary facilities in the midst of a global pandemic.”

“The warmer ocean waters that climate change brings are expected to make the stronger storms stronger and make them rapidly intensify more frequently and at a greater rate. These things have already been observed, particularly in the Atlantic, and it’s going to be increasingly so in coming decades. Heat is energy. Depending on the prevailing weather conditions you’re going to intensify those conditions. I don’t see a lot of options for Central America to deal with the global warming issue. There are going to be a lot migrants and in fact, a lot of the migration that’s already happening in recent years is due to the drought that started affecting Central America back in 2015.”

“I received the @DRC_ngo [Danish Refugee Council] report presented as evidence of push-backs and inhuman and degrading treatment of people at the Croatian border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am taking these reports very seriously. I am planning a thorough discussion with the Croatian authorities on these and other reports of fundamental rights violations. I will also discuss further development of the monitoring mechanism that the Croatian authorities put in place with the Commission’s financial support. Croatian authorities have committed to investigate reports of mistreatment at their external borders, monitor this situation closely and keep the Commission informed on progress made. Today I am meeting with ministers from the Western Balkans to discuss cooperation on migration management in light of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. I reminded that effective border management must be conducted in full respect of fundamental rights.”

“We need to see action to put a stop to the systematic use of violence. Treating human beings like this, inflicting severe pain and causing unnecessary suffering, irrespective of their migratory status, cannot and should not be accepted by any European country, or by any EU institution. There is an urgent need to ensure that independent border monitoring mechanisms are in place to prevent these abuses, and to ensure that all reports of abuse are transparently and credibly investigated – and those responsible are held to account.”

“The EU strongly condemns the unacceptable actions undertaken on Wednesday, 30 September by the Una Sana Canton authorities, forcibly transferring refugees and migrants from the temporary reception centre “Bira” in Bihać outside the emergency facility in Lipa, which is already at full capacity. As a result, hundreds of persons are left in harsh weather conditions without shelter and access to basic assistance. These irresponsible actions put lives at risk.”

“We will continue for some more days in good faith and communication. After that point, if there are any who react violently, the police will arrest them. We expect that in the coming days we will have completed the transfer of migrants inside the camp. It is nearly double the space of Moria which allows better conditions ... but there will be more security measures.”

“Migrants passing through the territory of Republika Srpska will be transported to the final destination (on the boundary line with the USC) and will be shown the way out from there. By recording citizens’ reports to the police, we know where they are and which routes they are taking. Migrants cannot move freely through the territory of Republika Srpska, commit possible crimes and put pressure on the population. I feel for the people of Una-Sana Canton, but we will not stop the practice of gathering migrants and transporting them wherever they want outside Republika Srpska; there will be no collective centres here.”

“The situation is getting worse every day. More and more people sleep outside with no food, no water, no electricity and, of course, they also become a bigger problem for the local population, because they need to go for water or to wash clothes or to take a bath in Una river and creeks, there is a lot of garbage around and unfortunately some people also enter houses and steal. This creates tension with the local population and is harder and harder every day.”
