If Biden wants to prevent North Korea from acting out, he needs to first provide the government with new incentives to talk-and that means new restrictions Washington can use as carrots. Biden, in other words, needs to take North Korean policy off autopilot and launch a proactive effort to deter Pyongyang. Otherwise, he risks encouraging an already emboldened Kim to stage a major provocation.” 5 hours ago

Christopher Cavoli “Russians don't have the numbers necessary to do a strategic breakthrough. More to the point, they don't have the skill and capability to do it, to operate at the scale necessary to exploit any breakthrough to strategic advantage. They do have the ability to make local advances and they have done some of that.” 5 hours ago

“The Meng Wanzhou incident is completely different in essence from the two Canadians' cases. The Meng Wanzhou incident is a political frame-up and persecution against a Chinese citizen, an act designed to hobble Chinese high-tech companies. Now Ms. Meng Wanzhou has returned to China safe and sound. Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, suspected of committing crimes endangering national security of China, applied for release on bail for medical reasons. After the confirmation from related departments and diagnosis of professional medical institutes of China and under the guarantee of the Canadian ambassador to China, the Chinese courts concerned decided to release them on bail in accordance with law and national security authorities enforced the decision. We noticed that after relevant information came out on September 25, many Canadian media outlets pointed out that the Meng Wanzhou incident is full of politics and void of the rule of law, and that the Canadian side should not have done the dirty work for the US. Canada should draw lessons and start from its own interests. As for the timing, I want to point out that the groundless detention of Meng Wanzhou is a serious mistake made by the US and Canada, which they should have corrected long ago.”

“China ... up until now, has said that there's been no linkage between the two, but by putting them on the plane tonight, they've clearly acknowledged that this was hostage-taking. It reminds me of the swaps you used to have of spies in the Cold War.”

“[I'm] pretty surprised, I must say, because China's been saying for the last many, many months that the cases were not related. Of course, we all knew that they were, and now it's proof that they were.”

“These two men [Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor] have gone through an unbelievably difficult ordeal. For the past 1,000 days, they have shown strength, perseverance, resilience and grace. There is going to be time for analysis and reflection in the coming days and weeks, but the fact of the matter is, I know Canadians will be incredibly happy to know right now, this Friday night, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor are on a plane and they're coming home.”

“The so-called support from the US and its allies further proved that those countries have been colluding with each other on containing China, which only makes the situation worse as China will not yield to political coercion. Trudeau is in an embarrassing position given the current dilemma with two Michaels [Michael Spavor, Michael Kovrig], facing opposition domestically and internationally, which shows that he lacks political wisdom. If he can't properly handle this dilemma, it would only cast a shadow over the upcoming election.”

“We've requested access to Michael Kovrig's hearing repeatedly but that access is being denied. Now we see that the court process itself is not transparent. We're very troubled by this.”

“This is gross interference [diplomats from more than two dozen countries gathered at the Beijing Court on Monday while Michael Kovrig was heading to the court, drawn by Canada according to Hua] in China's judicial sovereignty. China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to this, and will never accept it. Chinese courts fully protect their litigious rights. Because the case involves state secrets, the courts held the trial in private, in accordance with the law, which is beyond reproach. We have noted that the Criminal Law of Canada clearly stipulates that the Canadian judge has the right to decide to hold the relevant case in private for the purpose of safeguarding national security.”

“The arbitrary detention of Mr Kovrig and Mr Spavor is a top priority for the government of Canada and we continue to work tirelessly to secure their immediate release. We believe these detentions are arbitrary, and remain deeply troubled by the lack of transparency surrounding these proceedings.”

“I know, Mr. Chair, that some like to talk tough on China. To those who are seduced by this one-dimensional view, I say this: while it is easy to be tough, let's continue to be smart. Let's not fall into the temptation of tough and irresponsible rhetoric that will generate no tangible result for Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, our farmers and entrepreneurs, and human rights victims and advocates. The China of 2020 is not the China of 2015 or even the China of 2018. We see a country and a leadership increasingly prepared to throw its weight around to advance its interests.”

“The blind adherence to the use of the rule of law and no ransom ensures that Kovrig and Spavor will remain forgotten within Chinese prisons for the foreseeable future. The offering of Meng Wanzhou in exchange for Kovrig and Spavor is the only answer.”
