Theresa Fallon “Many people would like to see China play a constructive role, but I think now that we're in the third year of the war, this idea is wearing a bit thin.” 8 hours ago

Mahjoob Zweiri “What we have witnessed in the past few hours is that they talk about an agreement on the first stage. It could be understood that Hamas wants to release itself from the pressure globally, including the United States. So, they are giving concessions on the first stage, which leads to 40 days of ceasefire and exchange of captives. I think 33 old and sick captives. And then moving on to other stages. But we are seeing that we are going back to the main conditions, which means we are still talking about the main principles [complete ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza] that Hamas talked about. As the time of some sort of agreement on the first stage came, the Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to say actually, there is no agreement: We will go to Rafah regardless of any agreement. It reflects the divisions within the Israelis and crisis within the Israeli politics. On the other hand, Hamas has been more cautious. They do not want to show real progress made but they also do not want to say things have not changed. I think it's obvious some change has happened otherwise we would not expect [CIA chief] William Burns to be in the region.” 8 hours ago

“They have moved to terror - to preparing the murder of our journalists. Another task has come to the fore: to split Russian society and destroy Russia from within. It is not working. Foreign media organisations and social media had been used by the West's spies to confect provocations against Russia's armed forces. Prosecutors should react swiftly to fake news and reports that undermined order. They are often mainly organised from abroad, organised in different ways - either the information comes from there or the money. Prosecutors should fight extremism more actively.”

“'They clearly shot to kill': Swiss photojournalist Guillaume Briquet narrowly escaped bullets yesterday, fired by a Russian commando on a road in southern Ukraine. The 'press' markings were clearly visible on his car. RSF [] again reminds Russia's authorities that the targeting of journalists is a war crime! Following the recent spate of attacks on journalists covering the war in Ukraine, we urge reporters currently in the field to exercise extreme caution.”

“A total of 231 media outlets have had to close and more than 6.400 journalists have lost their jobs since 15 August. Women journalists have been hit the hardest, with four out of five no longer working. More than four out of every ten media outlets have disappeared and 60% of journalists and media employees are no longer able to work. Women have suffered much more than men: 84% of them have lost their jobs.”

“Yes, we growl and bite. Yes, we have sharp teeth and strong grip. But we are the prerequisite for progress. We are the antidote against tyranny. Let us rise and honour my and Maria Ressa's reporter colleagues, who have given their lives for this profession, with a minute of silence, and let us give our support to those who suffer persecution. I want journalists to die old.”

“I think our world has stopped loving democracy and has started reaching for dictatorships. Journalists are like independent media. They're the defence line between dictatorship and war.”

“A lot of protesters have large printed placards or pictures of journalists and members of parliament, lawyers, who have been arrested or imprisoned since July 25. They want to return to normal functioning of parliament. They want to return to the 2014 constitution, they want Kais Saied to step down and they would like to see new … [presidential and legislative] elections held.”

“You don't fight Belarusian disinformation with censorship. On the contrary, journalists should be allowed to document the situation as it is. We cannot accept that a government should encourage this kind of ban on journalistic coverage as soon as a sensitive situation arises. We believe that the state of emergency was introduced mainly to prevent the public from witnessing questionable activities along the country's border with Belarus. Critics have accused the Polish authorities of violating international law by pushing asylum seekers back across the border.”

“Although it is legitimate for the Polish authorities to declare a state of emergency on the border due to security issues, the imposed press freedom restrictions are arbitrary and disproportionate. The overall ban for journalists to work in the border zone is contrary to Poland's international press freedom commitments which state that press freedom may be restricted only with a legitimate goal and proportionally to the threat in question.”

“These murders take place within a context of continuously deteriorating security in the country, for all citizens, but particularly for human rights defenders and journalists. These attacks are fueled by impunity, which is almost complete in crimes against the press. The government of [President Andrés Manuel] López Obrador has been unwilling to take any meaningful steps to strengthen the justice state or protect journalists.”

“Joy because this is an extraordinary tribute to journalism, an excellent tribute to all journalists who take risks everywhere around the world to defend the right to information, And also urgency because it will be a decisive decade for journalism. Journalism is in danger, journalism is weakened, journalism is threatened. Democracies are weakened by disinformation, by rumours, by hate speech. This prize is a great signal a very powerful message to defend journalism everywhere.”

“This is another shocking exposé of the oceans of money sloshing around the darkness of the world's tax havens that must prompt immediate action, as has long been promised. Bravo to the whistleblowers and journalists for shining a light into this secret parallel system of capital, one open only to those with fat amounts of money and the greed to hoard it all untaxed, and those who facilitate it. This is where our missing hospitals are. This is where the pay-packets sit of all the extra teachers and firefighters and public servants we need. Whenever a politician or business leader claims there is 'no money' to pay for climate damage and innovation, for more and better jobs, for a fair post-COVID recovery, for more overseas aid, they know where to look.”

“Taliban authorities in Afghanistan have imposed wide-ranging restrictions on media and free speech that are already stifling criticism and dissent. Despite the Taliban's promises to allow media that 'respected Islamic values' to function, the new rules are suffocating media freedom in the country. The Taliban regulations are so sweeping that journalists are self-censoring and fear ending up in prison.”

“We have reports from Parwan province that two journalists were detained by the forces of the Islamic Emirate while covering an event. The detention of journalists while they cover events is a serious restriction to the access to information. We even have reports from Parwan that the journalists must get permission from the provincial culture and information department in order to report an event.”

“Stripping our journalists of accreditation on grounds of 'extremism' is a desperate and ominous move by an authoritarian government to stifle the independent media and ruthlessly control the availability of credible information inside Belarus. It's a violation of international standards and an assault on the Belarusian people who rely on us.”
