  • Emmanuel Macron
Emmanuel Macron “If the Russians were to break through the front lines, if there were a Ukrainian request [of sending ground troops to Ukraine], which is not the case today, we would legitimately have to ask ourselves this question.” 6 hours ago
  • David Cameron
David Cameron “We will give three billion pounds every year for as long as is necessary. We've just really emptied all we can in terms of giving equipment. The aid package was the largest from the UK so far. Some of that (equipment) is actually arriving in Ukraine today, while I'm here. Ukraine has a right to use the weapons provided by London to strike targets inside Russia, and that it was up to Kyiv whether to do so. Ukraine has that right. Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it's defending itself.” 6 hours ago

“In the case of Germany, the new government has not come out as strongly as it should have in diffusing this crisis because of its economic linkages with Russia and energy dependency through the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. But this also makes Germany look weak.”

“Russia has to know that if you do something bad in Ukraine then the Nato and US presence in the eastern flank of the alliance will increase. If you do this, you will provoke a bigger presence than now. These decisions had to be made now through bilateral channels and the alliance so if Russia acts there can be a swift and broad response that does not take months or years. Work is already underway for a tough economic sanctions package, including the disconnection of Russia from the Swift banking system, sanctions on the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 and other economic sanctions. That package needs to be prepared so it can be applied reasonably quickly. We need to be able to target those who are helping Russia to get more revenues.”

“It would be suicidal for Russia to start the invasion because the US and the EU will stop buying Russia's hydrocarbons and fertiliser and will give up on Nord Stream 2, a brand new natural gas pipeline to Germany that awaits certification. Russia will lose two-thirds of its foreign trade revenues, while US energy companies will reanimate their shale oil and liquefied natural gas projects to compensate for the lost exports from Russia. The very existence of Putin's regime that stands on oil exports will be in question.”

“We will also work closely with you to increase gas-supply capacity coming from member states of the European Union. And this also includes the option of working on arrangements to reverse the flow of an additional gas pipeline from Slovakia. Ukraine remains, and must remain, a reliable transit country for gas supplies to Europe.”

“Serbia luckily had the courage to build a gas pipeline with Russia. I was told I was crazy because I didn't want to close the coal mines … [but] you can't balance electricity with wind and solar energy. The crisis is much bigger than you think, the prices of construction materials are rising everywhere in Europe … Luckily, we had the courage to build a gas pipeline with Russia [Turkish stream]; if we hadn't, I could just take ropes to hang myself.”
