  • Daoud Kuttab
Daoud Kuttab “Throughout this Israeli war on Gaza, there hasn't been a warning publicly made by the US that Israel has heeded. It is indeed unclear to what extent such warnings are just optics of putting pressure on the Israeli government while continuing to support its every move. In this sense, one should take with a grain of salt reports that the Biden administration is holding off one shipment of weapons to Israel to pressure it into halting the full-scale invasion of Rafah.” 1 hour ago
  • Bernie Sanders
Bernie Sanders “The US must now use ALL its leverage to demand an immediate ceasefire, the end of the attacks on Rafah, and the immediate delivery of massive amounts of humanitarian aid to people living in desperation. Our leverage is clear. Over the years, the United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Israel.” 2 hours ago
  • Lloyd Austin
Lloyd Austin “We've been very clear … from the very beginning that Israel shouldn't launch a major attack into Rafah without accounting for and protecting the civilians that are in that battlespace. We've not made a final determination on how to proceed with that shipment [of weapons].” 2 hours ago
  • Vuk Vuksanović
Vuk Vuksanović “This visit [Xi Jinping in Belgrade] shows that Serbia has exchanged Russia for China went it comes to its main partner to bargain with the West. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine placed the Serbo-Russian relationship under close monitoring, so the government sees a benefit in playing the Chinese card more often now since it's deemed to be less provocative. The Balkans, and Serbia in particular, have become even more interesting for China now that one branch of the Belt and Road Initiative through Russia and Belarus was effectively cut off with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.” 2 hours ago
  • Aleksandar Vucic
Aleksandar Vucic “I told him [Xi Jinping] that as the leader of a great power he will be met with respect all over the world, but the reverence and love he encounters in our Serbia will not be found anywhere else. When it comes to cooperation with Beijing, the sky is the limit.” 2 hours ago
  • Catherine Russell
Catherine Russell “Rafah is now a city of children, who have nowhere safe to go in Gaza. If large-scale military operations start, not only will children be at risk from the violence, but also from chaos and panic, and at a time where their physical and mental states are already weakened.” 6 hours ago
  • Hani Mahmoud
Hani Mahmoud “You cannot create a safe zone in a war zone. Every time people move from one place to another, they are in search of basic needs and … necessities that are becoming very hard to find right now.” 6 hours ago

“Protests in US universities are a display of democracy in action, a welcome sight in an election year marked by concerns of voter apathy chiefly due to Israel's war on Gaza. So when I see a movement like this of students taking peaceful, non-violent action and expressing their concern about the US government backing of Israel, of where our tax money is going, I think that's extremely healthy. These students are out there concerned about America's role in backing Benjamin Netanyahu. On the one hand, we are supplying weapons and funds to do what he wants to do in Gaza, while on the other we are sending humanitarian aid to Gaza. This is the hypocrisy these students are concerned about.”

“The era of peace in Europe is over. And every time Ukrainian soldiers withdraw from a Ukrainian town because of the lack of ammunition, think of it not only in terms of democracy and defending the world-based order, but also in terms of Russian soldiers getting a few kilometres closer to your towns.”

“Because of Taiwan's contested status and the uncertainty that that brings not just to the region, but the world as well, everyone is really invested in who's going to be the one steering the ship, so to speak, because that will have a lot of implications for not just security, but also risk and economic potential. The reason so many people want to make sure that this is a free and fair election is because the world will be very interested if Taiwan's status as a democracy changes. I think people not only care about who wins the election but how they win.”

“He [Donald Trump] told the crowd to fight like hell. And all hell was unleashed. Then as usual he left the dirty work to others. He retreated to the White House. Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot. Donald Trump's campaign is obsessed with the past, not the future. Trump's assault on democracy isn't just part of his past. It's what he's promising for the future.”

“If Taiwan is safe, the world is safe, if the Taiwan Strait is peaceful, then the world is peaceful. No matter how great the threat of authoritarianism is to Taiwan, we absolutely will not be scared nor cower, we will uphold the values of democracy and freedom.”

“Biden, who promised to put human rights at the centre of his foreign policy, has ignored US clients' human rights violations and has been supporting strongmen who rule with an iron fist, while the region teeters under violent sectarian and authoritarian regimes. Washington cannot in good conscience claim to confront Russia and China in the name of democracy, human rights and the preservation of sovereignty, while appeasing colonialism and dictatorship in the Middle East or elsewhere. It is hypocritical and it is counterproductive.”

“It [the Supreme Court's ruling in June that ended the constitutional right to abortion] was one of the most important motivating issues to get Democrats out to the polls. I think also the worry from many Americans about the threats to democracy - that issue was not looked at enough by prognosticators.”

“Sadly, Taiwan has been prevented from participating in global meetings, most recently the World Health Organization, because of objections by the Chinese Communist Party. While they may prevent Taiwan from sending its leaders to global forums, they cannot prevent world leaders or anyone from travelling to Taiwan to pay respect to its flourishing democracy, to highlight its many successes and to reaffirm our commitment to continued collaboration.”

“Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shown again these regimes will stop at nothing in the pursuit of expansionist goals. As we watch images from half a world away of atrocities committed against another democracy on the frontlines of authoritarian expansionism, I would like to stress that, like Ukraine, Taiwan will not bend to pressure.”
