  • Ravina Shamdasani
Ravina Shamdasani “According to international law, Israel must ensure civilians have access to medical care, adequate food, safe water and sanitation. Failure to meet these obligations may amount to forced displacement, which is a war crime. There are strong indications that this [Rafah offensive] is being conducted in violation of international humanitarian law.” 1 hour ago
  • António Guterres
António Guterres “I appeal to all those with influence over Israel to do everything in their power to help avert even more tragedy. The international community has a shared responsibility to promote a humanitarian ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages and a massive surge in life-saving aid. It is time for the parties to seize the opportunity and secure a deal for the sake of their own people.” 1 hour ago
  • Annalena Baerbock
Annalena Baerbock “I warn against a major offensive on Rafah. A million people cannot simply vanish into thin air. They need protection. They need more humanitarian aid urgently … the Rafah and Kerem Shalom [Karem Abu Salem] border crossings must immediately be reopened.” 1 hour ago
  • Ayman Safadi
Ayman Safadi “Tremendous effort has been made to produce an exchange deal that'll release hostages and realize a ceasefire. Hamas has put out an offer. If Netanyahu genuinely wants a deal, he will negotiate the offer in earnest. Instead, he is jeopardizing the deal by bombing Rafah.” 18 hours ago

“It will have pretty substantial external implications. And those might play out for years to come. China has the world's highest number of billionaires but some 600 million citizens survive on an annual per capita income barely above $1,600. A rebalance by China is almost certain to lead to slower growth rates during the transition.”

“The Pandora Papers must be a wake-up call for EU finance ministers. Unfortunately, a grotesque picture is emerging at the meeting of EU finance ministers: while journalists publish the biggest tax leak ever, EU finance ministers are weakening their list of tax havens. In view of flourishing tax havens, it is absurd that the finance ministers are shortening the tax haven list. The EU list of tax havens is hardly any good in the fight against tax evasion. The list is piecemeal, with a number of important tax havens missing. The PandoraPapers show that billionaires and powerful people use many tax havens that are not on the EU list. Two-thirds of the shell companies in the Pandora files are in the British Virgin Islands, which are missing from the EU tax haven list.”
