Charles Kupchan “Whoever forms the next government in Kosovo must ensure that relations with Washington remain strong and intact. Kosovo cannot afford to be at odds with its allies. I would say, if you want a good relationship with the United States, make deals, get into the bazaar, be ready to negotiate. And I think that actions that are seen as causing difficulty will not go over well in Washington. Actions that are seen [as] advancing the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia will be greeted warmly in Washington.” 4 hours ago

Michael MacCambridge “Historically, it's been a time to talk about unity and togetherness and just celebrate this magnificent holiday in our national civic religion. It's complicated to have Donald Trump celebrating football, especially because of his somewhat troubled relationship with the N.F.L. and its players.” 4 hours ago

Gareth Rhodes “This is similar to sports betting or gambling. The retail customer putting in their funds is doing so at risk of losing most if not all of it with the hope of an outsize payoff.” 4 hours ago

Harrison Fields “Every action taken by the Trump-Vance administration is fully legal and compliant with federal law. Any legal challenge against it is nothing more than an attempt to undermine the will of the American people.” 5 hours ago

Judith Resnik “The administration seems to have wanted challenges that consume a ton of resources - of opponents, courts and public attention - even as members of the administration know the provisions do not square with the law that exists.” 5 hours ago

Background

The ongoing crisis in Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has escalated as over one million people have been displaced due to intense fighting. The recent offensive launched by the M23 rebels has exacerbated the situation, with the city, home to around 3 million people, facing significant instability. Concerns over health security are rising as the ongoing conflict threatens to worsen the situation further.

In response, 200  Africa CDC staff have been deployed to provide health relief, working to address the immediate medical needs of those affected. However, the return to normalcy and the restoration of security remain crucial in preventing the spread of diseases that could further impact the region.

Regional leaders have called for an immediate ceasefire, as the violence has already resulted in numerous casualties and injuries. Despite denials from Rwanda, which has been accused of supporting the rebels, the situation remains fluid with unclear control over the city and its government institutions, especially given Goma’s proximity to Rwanda. The urgent need for a resolution is critical, not only for the people of Goma but also for the wider region's stability.
