Baris Altintas “MLSA [Media and Law Studies Association] lawyers are currently assisting detained journalists AFP photo-reporter Yasin Akgul, freelance photo reporter Bulent Kilic, and Zeynep Kuray at the Vatan Police Headquarters. Journalist Emre Orman, who is sought by police, is also a client of MLSA. MLSA will provide legal support to any journalists who do not have legal counsel.” 11 hours ago

Anitta Hipper “Let me recall the European Council's conclusion from 21 March, where the Council is also reiterating its unwavering support to Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. And the last point on these referendums, that were a total sham and [conducted] at gunpoint. When it comes to the discussion on peace talks, our position is very clear, and I would like to reiterate two main points. One, the EU's position for peace is that it is for Ukraine to decide the actual conditions, and the second point that nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.” 11 hours ago

“Dozens of partner countries will participate in the meeting of the Ramstein group at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Thursday. Including those who can help boost our capabilities not only to defend against missiles but also against guided bombs and Russian aviation. We will discuss this with them and continue to persuade them. The task remains unchanged: strengthening our air defense.”

“Israel is using up these weapons at a very fast pace, as made obvious by the enormous death and destruction that's ongoing, and Biden is ready to resupply them. If he didn't do it, I'm sure the incoming Trump administration would do so. Not a single arms transfer has ever been blocked by Congress. So, there is unfortunately very little to stop it. At this point, the arms transfers will continue unabated. Outside the White House and Congress, there is far less support for arming Israel. [Biden] is doing this in the face of widespread opposition, not just in the international community, not just from human rights groups, but according to polls, a large majority of the American people.”

“Putin wants to seize, at the very least, the territory he already controls, and also has demands over Ukrainian neutrality and disarmament that would be impossible for any Ukrainian leader to sell politically. Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has admitted that painful compromises may be necessary, but insisted that, in return, he would need some form of meaningful security guarantee against subsequent Russian escalation, such as a promise of Nato membership or western peacekeepers on the ground. Neither option currently looks likely.”

“Israel's leaders are waiting for Donald Trump to take office because they think they'll have greater leeway … to put more pressure on Gaza to finally get Hamas to relent. I'm not so sure this is going to a happy place soon. While Trump has indicated he wants the war on Gaza to end that doesn't mean a negotiated settlement that halts the bloodshed.”

“On January 3, an attempt was made from Ukrainian territory to launch a missile attack against the Belgorod region using US-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles. These actions by the Kyiv regime, which is supported by Western curators, will be met with retaliation.”

“First responders suffer from unspeakable levels of stress, anxiety and frustration. We have heard them describe feelings of helplessness toward the victims who they could not save, and of the immense pain of losing colleagues on duty.”

“There are a lot of people on social media who want to attract attention with snappy slogans. I don't believe in courting Mr. Musk's favor. I'm happy to leave that to others. As Social Democrats, we have been used to the fact that there are rich media entrepreneurs who do not appreciate Social Democratic politics - and do not hide their opinions.”

“The Kremlin clearly has its eye on the parliamentary elections. Sandu's ruling party is not as well placed for this as they were for the presidential elections and the EU referendum, so it's enough for Russia to add a bit of pressure and they can actually push them to an area where they're going to lose the election. Moldova can buy gas in advance and have it delivered from the European market, but at much higher prices than it paid Gazprom. So, I'm guessing the Russian strategy is make them spend all their budget [on energy] instead of spending it on anything related to economic development in general, spend it to get through the winter. And then as the elections approach, they're going to have even higher inflation, even higher prices than they do already, which is pretty high. Without sufficient aid from the West, that's absolutely a strategy that can work.”

“Russian state propaganda [began] to spread messages blaming Moldova and its government for the situation and painting apocalyptic scenarios for the region some weeks before the end of gas transit. The propaganda intensified around January 1. I believe we can expect this to spiral in the next few weeks as the de-facto Transdniester authorities ignore Moldova's proposals for solutions.”

“The Russians are clearly in the game not just to pressure Ukraine, and Europe, and Moldova. But they've hung Transdniester out to dry, and this is really surprising everyone. What the Russians have done to their 30-year proxy on the left bank of the Dniester River, it's remarkable. People are going to remember this. It's freezing there.”
