  • Ben Hodges
Ben Hodges “Since the fall of Avdiivka in Ukraine's east on February 17 [2024], its forces have oozed forward, swallowing several villages, as Ukrainian forces have performed tactical retreats. Here we are in April [2024], and [the Russians] are oozing out. Why is that? I think it's because that's the best the Russians can do. They do not have the capability to knock Ukraine out of the war. Russia lacked the ability to equip large armoured formations that could move rapidly, with supporting artillery, engineers and logistics. I don't think it exists. That's why I feel fairly confident that the mission for [Ukrainian] general Oleksandr Syrskyi for the next several months is to stabilise this as much as he can to buy time for Ukraine to grow the size of the army, to rebuild the defence industry of Ukraine, as well as give us time to find more ammunition for them. I think of 2024 as a year of industrial competition. So the army has got to buy time.” 18 minutes ago
  • Marwan Bishara
Marwan Bishara “Once again, the US's veto demonstrated a policy of it's my way or the highway. Palestine could only be a country the way the United States sees it, or Israel sees it, only at the time that it's suitable to the United States and within the geopolitics and the global interest of the United States. The US is sacrificing the freedom of Palestinian people for egotistical and narrow interests of the United States and Israel.” 16 hours ago
  • Brad Setser
Brad Setser “Tariffs are currently 7.5 percent on electric vehicle battery packs but 25 percent on the components of those packs. The lower rate should be raised. China had long steered its subsidies to companies that manufacture and source their products in China - and sometimes had required those companies to be Chinese-owned. In order to build up industrial sectors where China has a first-mover advantage and now a cost advantage you need to have an insulated market - and to use some of the tools that China has already used.” 20 hours ago
  • Lael Brainard
Lael Brainard “China's policy-driven overcapacity poses a serious risk to the future of the American steel and aluminum industry. China cannot export its way to recovery. China is simply too big to play by its own rules.” 20 hours ago

“Iran is playing with the fate of all people in the Middle East and has led an entire region to the brink of the abyss. The aim now is to stop Iran without further escalation. Iran's plan to sow further violence must not work. Israel has our full solidarity and can rely on us. We also do not forget the many dozens of Israeli hostages who are still being held captive in Hamas tunnels. They must finally be released.”

“With this irresponsible and unjustifiable attack, Iran is risking a regional conflagration. In these difficult times, Germany stands closely by Israel. We will now discuss further reactions closely with our G7 partners and allies.”

“I think it's crystal clear the situation cannot go on like it is. Families are waiting for their fathers, for their mothers … who have been captured by the terrorist organisation Hamas. On the other hand, we also need a humanitarian pause for the hundreds of thousands of people suffering in Gaza. There are also children who have lost their parents. Imagine our own children living without any parents, any water, any food. The easiest way to achieve the pause would be for Hamas to lay down its weapons.”

“The fact we've only just made a decision [on sending tanks] and already the next debate [fighter jets] is firing up in Germany - that just seems frivolous and undermines people's trust in government decisions. I can only advise against entering a bidding war over weapons systems.”

“The thing to remember here is the real value that the main battle tank Leopard 2 possesses is that it is a heavier and faster tank than many of the tanks the Russian army has in Ukraine. It's also the case that very many different European Union countries have certain forms of the Leopard 2 tanks. The principle here is clear: There are many of them in the EU but also in NATO European countries.”

“There are good reasons for the deliveries and there are good reasons against, and in view of the entire situation of a war that has been ongoing for almost one year, all pros and cons must be weighed very carefully. We will make our decisions as soon as possible. I am very sure that there will be a decision in the short term but … I don't know how the decision will look.”

“We're in 2023 in the middle of a climate crisis, and while destroying a village to expand one of the biggest carbon bombs in Europe should be considered criminal, it is still legal. Fossil fuel companies' influence is so powerful that the ones considered criminals now are the ones fighting for climate justice. It is time to hold fossil fuel companies accountable.”

“That is painful, but it is a sheer necessity in this situation to reduce gas consumption. But if we don't do it, then we run the risk that the storage facilities will not be full enough at the end of the year towards the winter season. And then we are blackmailable on a political level.”

“Putin will only seriously negotiate peace when he realises that he cannot break Ukraine's defences. Western allies, who have been arming Ukraine and imposing heavy sanctions on Russia, will continue their backing for Kyiv. It is a matter of making it clear to Putin that there will be no dictated peace. Ukraine will not accept that and neither will we.”

“It has long been clear that while China is a major trading partner, there are very relevant problems, including when it comes to respecting human rights. Germany is diversifying more, reducing its dependency on China, and will closely examine applications from German companies wanting to make investments in China to rule out human rights violations and forced labour in the supply chain. At the EU level, too, government subsidies to Chinese competitors who want to enter the domestic market should be looked at more closely.”

“After the end of World War II, a large group of Germans believed that if there is stability in the country today, it is because hundreds of thousands of soldiers from the Soviet Union left German territory without firing a single shot. Many in Germany believe that the country owes a certain debt of gratitude to the Kremlin, in turn initiating economic and political partnerships with Russia. But over the years, Germany has failed to realise that Russia is no longer interested in partnership. Russia has been keen to turn the clock back in time to the Soviet era, for quite some time now. Berlin continued to believe in the idea of partnership, even while others had already started to warn Germany that it would probably … pay a price for not abandoning this idea.”

“We have managed to reach a situation where Germany is able to bear an oil embargo. This means it won't be without consequences. We still have no solution for the refinery in Schwedt. We can't guarantee that supplies will be continuous. There will for sure be price hikes and there will be some outages. But that doesn't mean we will slide into an oil crisis.”

“We are dealing with a criminal war. It is clear we must end as quickly as possible all economic ties to Russia. We must plan tough sanctions, but gas cannot be substituted in the short term. We would inflict more damage on ourselves than on them.”

“In the case of Germany, the new government has not come out as strongly as it should have in diffusing this crisis because of its economic linkages with Russia and energy dependency through the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. But this also makes Germany look weak.”

“Germany has been resisting pressure from the US because it absolutely needs reliable gas supplies from Russia and, for all it is now one of the top exporters of liquified natural gas in the world, the US cannot replace Russia in that role as key gas supplier to Germany. Ukraine stands to lose several billion dollars per year in transit fees - which is what makes NS2 a cheaper option for shipment - a key stream of hard currency income for the country.”

“The more the US talks about sanctioning or criticises the project [Nord Stream 2], the more it becomes popular in German society. Germans in the majority support the project, it is only parts of the elite and media who are against the pipeline.”

“In February, a complete field hospital will be handed over, including the necessary training, all co-financed by Germany with 5.3 million euros ($6.0 million). We are standing on Kyiv's side. We must do everything to de-escalate the situation. Weapons deliveries would not be helpful at the moment - that is the consensus within the government. There is no Russian veto-right for membership to NATO. Every sovereign nation that shares our values is free to apply for membership. But beyond this red line, there is readiness from the West to speak with Russia and to take its interests into account.”

“A booster jab will pump up your protection to 70-75% and it will also reduce your risk of a severe infection but that could also lend you a false sense of security. While it is important to get the unvaccinated vaccinated, first jabs would not be enough to fight off omicron. It takes many weeks for the immune system to develop a defense. The virus moves faster than that.”

“He was elected because he is very similar to Angela Merkel - and that was his calculation. Just because Scholz is like Merkel, that does not mean Germany is headed for more of the same. Merkel was a reactive politician who responded to the political and public mood. Scholz is far more decisive. He has clear goals, and he puts things in place in order to achieve them [...]. If it doesn't work, he says: 'OK, next time I'll do it better'.”
