Theresa Fallon “Many people would like to see China play a constructive role, but I think now that we're in the third year of the war, this idea is wearing a bit thin.” 1 hour ago

Mahjoob Zweiri “What we have witnessed in the past few hours is that they talk about an agreement on the first stage. It could be understood that Hamas wants to release itself from the pressure globally, including the United States. So, they are giving concessions on the first stage, which leads to 40 days of ceasefire and exchange of captives. I think 33 old and sick captives. And then moving on to other stages. But we are seeing that we are going back to the main conditions, which means we are still talking about the main principles [complete ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza] that Hamas talked about. As the time of some sort of agreement on the first stage came, the Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to say actually, there is no agreement: We will go to Rafah regardless of any agreement. It reflects the divisions within the Israelis and crisis within the Israeli politics. On the other hand, Hamas has been more cautious. They do not want to show real progress made but they also do not want to say things have not changed. I think it's obvious some change has happened otherwise we would not expect [CIA chief] William Burns to be in the region.” 1 hour ago

US State Department lifts restrictions on U.S.-Taiwan contact

Page with all the IPSEs stored in the archive related to the Context US State Department lifts restrictions on U.S.-Taiwan contact.
The IPSEs are presented in chronological order based on when the IPSEs have been pronounced.

“Pompeo announced the end of the restrictions on Taiwan relations at a time when Trump was being 'abandoned' by the Republicans after the storming of the Capitol by pro-Trump rioters on January 6. Senior members of the Trump administration have begun to seek to retain the greatest political power possible, and are expecting to make a comeback, or even a decisive break with Trump. Pompeo is a typical example. There is no major change in relations between the US and the island. It is expected that the Democratic administration will not immediately reverse the current policies, because there is a cross-party consensus to use Taiwan as a pawn against China. Taiwan has a relatively low priority, and Biden's urgent task is to manage risks, rather than increase risks. It is expected that the Biden administration will not use the Taiwan issue to irritate China in the short term.”

“Made some history today: Welcomed Taiwan Representative Chen [Chen Hsing-hsing] to our Embassy. Glad that our @StateDept colleagues around the world will now be able to host our friends from this vibrant democracy on our Embassy grounds. Thanks @Taiwan_in_NL for your friendship.”

“The January 9, 2021 @StateDept announcement that the US will lift all self-imposed restrictions on the #US-#Taiwan relationship marks an especially significant and positive #international development. For decades, #US policy toward #Taiwan has been constrained by our own restrictions. The US #government lifted all restrictions, realigning US #policy with reality, and setting the stage for a new era of #USTaiwan relations. This development is long overdue. As @Transition46 [Biden-Harris administration] assumes office, they will inherit a posture in #USTaiwan relations removed of unhelpful limitations and difficult political decisions. The #BidenAdministration will be empowered to chart a new course in #US #policy with tremendous possibilities. We encourage the incoming #BidenAdministration to build upon this important moment to support a more peaceful and prosperous #IndoPacific.”

“Taiwan is in the constitution as part of China, and it’s something that they will defend. This is not something that is up for debate, you can expect very … strong reactions, and they will be looking at Biden to undo this, otherwise they are going to be serious consequences, and even more trouble between these two powers”

“I'm grateful to @SecPompeo [Mike Pompeo] & @StateDept [US State Department] for lifting restrictions unnecessarily limiting our engagements these past years. I'm also thankful for strong bipartisan support in Congress for the #Taiwan Assurance Act, which advocates a review of prior guidelines. The closer partnership between #Taiwan & the #US is firmly based on our shared values, common interests & unshakeable belief in freedom & democracy. We'll continue working in the months & years ahead to ensure Taiwan is & continues to be a force for good in the world.”

“The United States government took these actions [restrictions on interactions between Taiwanese and American diplomats] unilaterally, in an attempt to appease the Communist regime in Beijing. No more. Today I am announcing that I am lifting all of these self-imposed restrictions.”
