  • Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin Netanyahu “But while Israel has shown willingness, Hamas remains entrenched in its extreme positions, first among them the demand to remove all our forces from the Gaza Strip, end the war, and leave Hamas in power. Israel cannot accept that.” 13 hours ago
  • Bernard Smith
Bernard Smith “I know my colleagues who were working out of occupied East Jerusalem have now stopped working out of there, and both Arabic and English channels have stopped broadcasting from there. The reason that those of us here in Ramallah and Gaza are still operating is because this is the occupied Palestinian territories. The Cabinet decision applies in Israel and Israel's domestic territory. To close Al Jazeera's operations in this part of the occupied West Bank, a military order from the governor would be required. That hasn't come yet. The network might be looking at some legal appeal, but it's a 45-day closure for now. It could be extended again, but it gives the Israeli authorities the right to seize Al Jazeera's broadcasting equipment and cut the channel from cable and satellite broadcasters. We know that's already happened in the last couple of hours in Israel; any operators that have been broadcasting Al Jazeera English or Arabic now have a sign on their screens saying they're no longer allowed to transmit and receive Al Jazeera.” 13 hours ago
  • Omar Shakir
Omar Shakir “Their [Al Jazeera] offices have been bombed in Gaza. Their staff have been beaten in the West Bank. They've been killed in the West Bank and Gaza. Rather than trying to silence reporting on its atrocities in Gaza, Israel should stop committing them.” 14 hours ago

“If the law came into force it could violate a treaty signed with the United States on economic and trade relations. One of the arguments considered during the analyses of this law was the issue of an international agreement that was concluded in 1990... this treaty speaks about the protection of investments. There is a clause which says that media-related investments may be excluded, but it concerns future investments.”

“On the American side, the legislative and executive powers have made it clear to Warsaw that proceeding with this law won't go without consequences to Polish-American relations. Pushing for the law regardless of these clear messages means that PiS [Law and Justice party] doesn't care anymore about maintaining a good relationship between Poland and the U.S.”

“Due to its position, Poland cannot be neutral. Either it is in the family of Western civilization or among the authoritarian dictatorships of the East. If you cause Poland to lose gigantic money for further development and reconstruction, if you also lead us out of our European home, history and the people will not forgive you.”

“For the cosmopolitan tradition in Polish culture, the social hierarchy is built on contempt for those considered to be less cultured, a deeply rooted attitude that originates in the contempt felt by the gentry for the peasantry. For the rightwing tradition, on the other hand, the social hierarchy is based on ethnicity, manifesting itself as hostility towards minorities, whether it be Jews, Muslim migrants, or in the case of the present campaign, members of the LGBT community. We have seen a clash of these two attitudes during the campaign.”

“He [Jarosław Kaczyński] wants to create a Catholic state of the Polish nation. His vision is that of Salazar, or rather Franco, but adding strong support from the US. He [Kaczyński] thinks he's creating Bavaria [a German region] - strong traditions and a modern economy, but, actually, what might come out of this is Franco's Spain”
