  • Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin Netanyahu “But while Israel has shown willingness, Hamas remains entrenched in its extreme positions, first among them the demand to remove all our forces from the Gaza Strip, end the war, and leave Hamas in power. Israel cannot accept that.” 8 hours ago
  • Bernard Smith
Bernard Smith “I know my colleagues who were working out of occupied East Jerusalem have now stopped working out of there, and both Arabic and English channels have stopped broadcasting from there. The reason that those of us here in Ramallah and Gaza are still operating is because this is the occupied Palestinian territories. The Cabinet decision applies in Israel and Israel's domestic territory. To close Al Jazeera's operations in this part of the occupied West Bank, a military order from the governor would be required. That hasn't come yet. The network might be looking at some legal appeal, but it's a 45-day closure for now. It could be extended again, but it gives the Israeli authorities the right to seize Al Jazeera's broadcasting equipment and cut the channel from cable and satellite broadcasters. We know that's already happened in the last couple of hours in Israel; any operators that have been broadcasting Al Jazeera English or Arabic now have a sign on their screens saying they're no longer allowed to transmit and receive Al Jazeera.” 8 hours ago
  • Omar Shakir
Omar Shakir “Their [Al Jazeera] offices have been bombed in Gaza. Their staff have been beaten in the West Bank. They've been killed in the West Bank and Gaza. Rather than trying to silence reporting on its atrocities in Gaza, Israel should stop committing them.” 8 hours ago

Myanmar military coup

Page with all the IPSEs stored in the archive related to the Context Myanmar military coup.
The IPSEs are presented in chronological order based on when the IPSEs have been pronounced.

“While there have been individual responses from UN member states such as the US, UK, European Union, and Australia, they haven't been sufficient to cause enough of an impact on the Myanmar military for them to change their thinking or to try and pressure them into rethinking this coup and whether it is in their interests or not. The UK could put forward a resolution, but so far we've seen China and Russia specifically - the other permanent members of the security council - they would veto any resolution calling for a global arms embargo, which is essential to end the oppression of the Myanmar people by this quite heinous regime.”

“The sentencing of Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday on bogus charges are the latest example of the military's determination to eliminate all opposition and suffocate freedoms in Myanmar. The court's farcical and corrupt decision is part of a devastating pattern of arbitrary punishment that has seen more than 1,300 people killed and thousands arrested since the military coup in February. The international community must step up to protect civilians and hold perpetrators of grave violations to account, and ensure humanitarian and health assistance is granted as a matter of utmost urgency.”

“Since the day of the coup, it's been clear that the charges against Aung San Suu Kyi, and the dozens of other detained MPs, have been nothing more than an excuse by the junta to justify their illegal power grab.”

“Myanmar is a textbook case of an aspiring democracy crushed underfoot by a tyrant. It symbolises the global struggle for political pluralism, progressive values, and supposedly universal rights that the democracy summit hopes to advance. It is also a litmus test. Will Biden's well-intentioned waffle-fest, as critics characterise it, make any real difference? If democracy's champions cannot resolve an open-and-shut case such as Myanmar, they may as well abandon their Zoom session and switch to PlayStation.”

“At least 100 buildings are thought to have been destroyed so far by the fire … which reportedly broke out at around 11:00 am following the use of heavy weapons. The destruction caused by this violence is utterly senseless. The people who live here have already had to flee their homes to escape violent clashes in recent weeks. Many will now have lost what little they had left.”

“This is the darkest moment of the nation and the moment that the dawn is close. In order to form a federal democracy, which all ethnic brothers, who have been suffering various kinds of oppressions from the dictatorship for decades, really desired, this revolution is the chance for us to put our efforts together.”

“There is extensive video evidence of security forces viciously beating protesters, medics, and bystanders. There is video of soldiers and police systematically moving through neighbourhoods, destroying property, looting shops, arbitrarily arresting protesters and passersby, and firing indiscriminately into people's homes. It should come as little surprise that there is growing evidence that this same Myanmar military, led by the same senior leadership, is now engaging in crimes against humanity.”

“I saw today very disturbing video clips. One was police beating a volunteer medical crew. They were not armed. Another video clip showed a protester was taken away by police and they shot him from very near, maybe only one meter. He didn't resist to his arrest, and it seems that he died on the street.”

“The systematic brutality of the military junta is once again on horrific display throughout Myanmar. I urge members of the UN Security Council to view the photos/videos of the shocking violence being unleashed on peaceful protesters before meeting in Friday's close-door session.”

“As the junta ratchets up its brutal attacks against peaceful protesters in Myanmar, the world must ratchet up its response. Words of condemnation are welcome but insufficient. We must act. I'm releasing a statement today w options for UN member states & the UN Security Council.”

“I was overwhelmed today as I watched Myanmar's UN ambassador's remarkable act of courage at the UN. Despite enormous pressure to do otherwise, he spoke up for the people of Myanmar and against an illegal coup. It's time for the world to answer that courageous call with action.”

“There is no justification for the military's actions, and we must continue to call for the reversal of this impermissible situation, exhausting all collective and bilateral channels to restore Myanmar's path on democratic reform. It seems they want to continue making large-scale arrests. This is cruel and inhumane. If there is any escalation in terms of military brutality - and sadly, as we have seen this before in Myanmar - against people exercising their basic rights, let us act swiftly and collectively.”

“[It is] exceedingly rare for an ambassador [Kyaw Moe Tun] to the United Nations to speak out against events in their own country. This may well spur some members of the General Assembly to take a slightly tougher position. The General Assembly doesn't have real teeth but it certainly amplifies a message and may well also give a little bit of a prod to the other key organ of the United Nations, the one that does have the teeth – the United Nations Security Council. The place to watch is China, which of course is a permanent member of the UNSC. Perhaps what we've seen today in the General Assembly might force China to take a little bit of a stronger stand on this.”

“We need further strongest possible action from the international community to immediately end the military coup, to stop oppressing the innocent people, to return the state power to the people and to restore the democracy. “The time for talk is over. Governments and the UN need to front-load sanctions against Myanmar's military-controlled companies now to show [Senior General] Min Aung Hlaing and the State Administrative Council junta how bleak their future will be if they continue down this path. When it is conducting operations in the field, the Tatmadaw [Myanmar's military] operates on a scorched earth basis, killing civilians who flee, torturing and murdering men they capture and raping women and girls. Yangon is likely to be the last place where the junta cracks down. Yangon has the embassies, the UN offices, the international journalists, and the heart of the business community centred there.”
