  • Alon Liel
Alon Liel “The move [Egypt joining South Africa's ICJ genocide case against Israel] is an unbelievable diplomatic blow to Israel. Egypt is the cornerstone of our standing in the Middle East. The connections that Israel has in the Middle East and North Africa today, including with Jordan, the UAE and Morocco, is all a result of what Egypt did 40 years ago. With Egypt joining South Africa now in The Hague, it's a real diplomatic punch. Israel would have to take it very seriously. This is what I have been warning about. It's coming from several directions. Israel has to … listen to the world - not only to the Israeli public opinion asking now for revenge. We have to look overall in the wider picture, in the long-term security of Israel, not only in the next few weeks in Gaza.” 11 hours ago
  • Franz-Stefan Gady
Franz-Stefan Gady “The Russians have understood, just as a lot of analysts have, that the major disadvantage that Ukraine is currently suffering from is manpower. By thinning out the frontline, you are increasing the odds of a breakthrough.” 13 hours ago
  • Oleksandr Syrskyi
Oleksandr Syrskyi “This week, the situation in Kharkiv Oblast deteriorated substantially. Currently, there are continuing battles along the state's border with Russia. The situation is challenging, but the Defence Forces are doing everything possible to maintain defensive lines and positions, resulting in defeat for the adversary.” 14 hours ago
  • John Kirby
John Kirby “It is possible that Russia will make further advances in the coming weeks, but we do not anticipate any major breakthroughs, and over time, the influx of U.S. assistance will enable Ukraine to withstand these attacks over the course of 2024.” 14 hours ago
  • Volker Türk
Volker Türk “I can see no way that the latest evacuation orders, much less a full assault, in an area with an extremely dense presence of civilians, can be reconciled with the binding requirements of international humanitarian law and with the two sets of binding provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice.” 14 hours ago

“This would cause great tensions and lead to pre-census campaigns and would negatively affect the quality of all the other data. Also, international standards say that population censuses should be avoided in turbulent socio-political periods. Due to the extremely unstable socio-political situation in the country and the lack of trust in [state] institutions, the census should be organised at the earliest in October 2022.”

“We question the utility of a national census that collects data relating to ethnic identity at this time - certain political forces are cynically championing this undertaking, hoping it will further drive a wedge between those who identify as Montenegrin and those who identify as Serb. How does this help the country move forward?”

“Given that for the first time in the history of Montenegro, one government was replaced by democratic, electoral means, we can say that, in the political sense, Montenegro has been liberated. But we are aware that we are in a democratic transition and that democracy and pluralism still need truly to live in all segments, heads and pores of our society. Montenegro must demonstrate justice, democracy and tolerance. Predecessors spoke of 'coexistence', our goal is a step further - the permeation of diversity through a true process of inclusion. My wish and my decision were for the Government to be a Government of experts, a Government of civic orientation. That was the historical need of all citizens of Montenegro.”

“Today's performance with Serbian tricolors in Montenegrin towns confirms that the 'Serbian world' is an ideology supported by two-thirds of the Montenegrin authorities.”

“I am here to show my love for the country. We are not asking for anything from anyone else, but we are dismissed by the occupying Serbian Church. We are here defending our dignity.”

“Now is the time for all decision-makers in Montenegro to prove their commitment to the EU path and EU values, promoting peace and tolerance and working together constructively, despite all political differences, for the benefit of citizens and the country's European future.”

“If someone wants to return Karadjordjevic property, he is probably making the statement that Montenegrins are Serbs and their place is with Serbia. This is clearly a slap at the ideology of Djukanovic [Milo Djukanovic] and others who favor Montenegrin independence and separate identity. Monarchy is a dead issue in the postcommunist Balkans, of symbolic value at best. These royal families probably mean little or nothing to most Montenegrins, except as historical curiosities.”

“This has contributed to the Committee's view that divides between communities may be deepening and becoming more marked. Incidents of religious discord between different Orthodox [church] communities have also been noted. Hate speech is criminalized, but there is little monitoring of social media by the authorities because no agency has the mandate to do so. There is a lack of clarity surrounding the display of symbols of other states, with a law in force which prohibits such a display, which should be dealt with in forthcoming legislation. Authorities must remain vigilant to prevent divisions within Montenegrin society along ethnic and religious lines and encourage a spirit of tolerance.”

“In addition to the state of Serbia, the main instigator of the Greater Serbia idea and the unification of 'Serbian lands' is the Serbian Orthodox Church [SPC]. Its main strength lies in the fact that it is guaranteed by law that it can act across borders, which it does. Under the guise of the church's struggle for its religious rights, it conducted political changes which brought to power ultra-right pro-Serbian parties such as the Democratic Front.”
