  • Ben Hodges
Ben Hodges “Since the fall of Avdiivka in Ukraine's east on February 17 [2024], its forces have oozed forward, swallowing several villages, as Ukrainian forces have performed tactical retreats. Here we are in April [2024], and [the Russians] are oozing out. Why is that? I think it's because that's the best the Russians can do. They do not have the capability to knock Ukraine out of the war. Russia lacked the ability to equip large armoured formations that could move rapidly, with supporting artillery, engineers and logistics. I don't think it exists. That's why I feel fairly confident that the mission for [Ukrainian] general Oleksandr Syrskyi for the next several months is to stabilise this as much as he can to buy time for Ukraine to grow the size of the army, to rebuild the defence industry of Ukraine, as well as give us time to find more ammunition for them. I think of 2024 as a year of industrial competition. So the army has got to buy time.” 1 hour ago

Marwan Bishara “Once again, the US's veto demonstrated a policy of it's my way or the highway. Palestine could only be a country the way the United States sees it, or Israel sees it, only at the time that it's suitable to the United States and within the geopolitics and the global interest of the United States. The US is sacrificing the freedom of Palestinian people for egotistical and narrow interests of the United States and Israel.” 18 hours ago
  • Brad Setser
Brad Setser “Tariffs are currently 7.5 percent on electric vehicle battery packs but 25 percent on the components of those packs. The lower rate should be raised. China had long steered its subsidies to companies that manufacture and source their products in China - and sometimes had required those companies to be Chinese-owned. In order to build up industrial sectors where China has a first-mover advantage and now a cost advantage you need to have an insulated market - and to use some of the tools that China has already used.” 21 hours ago
  • Lael Brainard
Lael Brainard “China's policy-driven overcapacity poses a serious risk to the future of the American steel and aluminum industry. China cannot export its way to recovery. China is simply too big to play by its own rules.” 22 hours ago

“Before his ouster, Djukanovic had warned that Serbia is seeking to establish a 'Serbian world' where it would exert control over all Balkan states with historic links to Serbia, including Montenegro. With Serb nationalists celebrating Djukanovic's ousting across the Balkans and Milatović declaring his ambition to strengthen ties with Serbia, it appears, at least for now, that the change in leadership in Montenegro will help Belgrade's ambitions for regional hegemony. It was telling that Milatović's supporters celebrated his victory by waving Serbian flags.”

“Unfortunately, there were poison-arrow messages coming through the media, which no one needs. We need to forget what happened and look for areas that connect us. Let's not touch on the disputed points at this moment and focus on the economy.”

“Unfortunately, [Serbia's] neighbours felt the consequences of these kinds of politics in the most brutal way – through huge human casualties, material destruction and with an economy lagging behind modern civilisation.”

“Serbia-Montenegro relations are not as good as was expected when there was a change of government at the end of August in Montenegro. They are not following the dynamics that could have been expected. For two neighbouring and in many ways very close countries, it is necessary to establish the clearest possible dynamics in meetings of high-ranking officials at state level. In the next period, there should be as many of these mutual visits as possible.”

“People ask why Ana [Brnabic] did not accept the invitation. If she’s going to Podgorica, who will be waiting for her at the airport? Is our ambassador waiting for her or not? Or did you [Montenegro] expel him, and you have not yet said whether you agree with the decision of [Montenegrin President] Milo Djukanovic who expelled him”

“It is not a question of who will welcome the Prime Minister of Serbia [Ana Brnabic]. The question is will she find time to come and greet all those who would like to see her in Montenegro, because she is the Prime Minister of fraternal and neighbouiring Serbia. Our people should not be faced with … technical questions about whether the Prime Minister [of Serbia] will be welcomed by the [Serbian] charge d’affaires or the ambassador. In that formal sense, there is someone to welcome her.”

“Such acts [expulsion of the Serbian ambassador in Montenegro] are not in the spirit of the European path and good regional cooperation of friendly countries. We will promote a truly good neighborly policy with Belgrade, as well as with everyone in the region, on the principle of sovereignty, independence and noninterference in the internal affairs of other countries.”

“It is more than obvious that the Serbian Orthodox Church was not only inappropriately involved in the elections, but was also the most active political actor. The Serbian Orthodox Church is constantly an instrument of Greater Serbian nationalism and Russian imperial interests in the Balkans. Only this time it did it openly.”
