Theresa Fallon “Many people would like to see China play a constructive role, but I think now that we're in the third year of the war, this idea is wearing a bit thin.” 17 hours ago

Mahjoob Zweiri “What we have witnessed in the past few hours is that they talk about an agreement on the first stage. It could be understood that Hamas wants to release itself from the pressure globally, including the United States. So, they are giving concessions on the first stage, which leads to 40 days of ceasefire and exchange of captives. I think 33 old and sick captives. And then moving on to other stages. But we are seeing that we are going back to the main conditions, which means we are still talking about the main principles [complete ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza] that Hamas talked about. As the time of some sort of agreement on the first stage came, the Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to say actually, there is no agreement: We will go to Rafah regardless of any agreement. It reflects the divisions within the Israelis and crisis within the Israeli politics. On the other hand, Hamas has been more cautious. They do not want to show real progress made but they also do not want to say things have not changed. I think it's obvious some change has happened otherwise we would not expect [CIA chief] William Burns to be in the region.” 17 hours ago

“Olaf Scholz has the best chances to become chancellor. That's crystal clear. It is important to respect the result. Part of that is that I once again congratulate Olaf Scholz.”

“The mandate is very unclear. It is neither a mandate for the Social Democrats to go on with social democratic policymaking, the Green Party to put the focus exclusively on climate politics, nor the FDP to make sure that social justice policy and climate policy stays within the framework of a liberal market economy. The only thing which is clear is that most people wanted Olaf Scholz become the next chancellor.”

“We cannot be satisfied with the results of the election. We will do everything possible to build a conservative-led government because Germans now need a future coalition that modernises our country. It will probably be the first time that we will have a government with three partners.”

“The issue of succession became perhaps the most important campaign issue. Voters are more worried or more interested in who would be most competent, and who would be best able to manage Germany and Germany's future. So personalities have become a major focus in this campaign.”

“Macron will try to usurp Merkel's position in Europe. The German position won't necessarily change, but whoever now comes to power will have to deal with a broader (domestic) coalition so they will find it slightly harder to lead on the international stage.”

“If the CDU / CSU remains in power, the situation will remain more or less the same. However, I am intrigued by the potential coming of the Greens to power, because their views are much more critical and demanding. If they lead foreign policy, there may be milder changes, but not essential ones.”
