  • Karine Jean-Pierre
Karine Jean-Pierre “Americans have the right to peacefully protest. Forcibly taking over a building is not peaceful.” 6 hours ago
  • Janet Yellen
Janet Yellen “Treasury has consistently warned that companies will face significant consequences for providing material support for Russia's war, and the U.S. is imposing them today on almost 300 targets.” 6 hours ago
  • Catherine Russell
Catherine Russell “Over 200 days of war have already killed or maimed tens of thousands of children in Gaza. For hundreds of thousands of children in the border city of Rafah, there is added fear of an escalated military operation that would bring catastrophe on top of catastrophe for children. Nearly all of the some 600,000 children now crammed into Rafah are either injured, sick, malnourished, traumatised or living with disabilities.” 6 hours ago
  • Eric Adams
Eric Adams “We cannot allow what should be a lawful protest to turn into a violent spectacle that saves and serves no purpose. There's no place for acts of hate in our city. I want to continue to commend the professionalism of the police department and to thank Columbia University. It was a tough decision, we understood that. But with the very clear evidence of their observation and the clear evidence from our intelligence division, that they understood it was time to move and the action had to end and we brought it to a peaceful conclusion.” 14 hours ago
  • Sergei Shoigu
Sergei Shoigu “To maintain the required pace of the offensive … it is necessary to increase the volume and quality of weapons and military equipment supplied to the troops, primarily weapons.” 15 hours ago

“We are also in regular and close contact with China and the Chinese leadership. The visit that the minister for education and research is making to Taiwan now doesn't call into question our stance in any way.”

“When I hear reports - and I don't know whether they are true - according to which China may be planning to supply kamikaze drones to Russia while at the same time presenting a peace plan, then I suggest we judge China by its actions and not its words.”

“It has long been clear that while China is a major trading partner, there are very relevant problems, including when it comes to respecting human rights. Germany is diversifying more, reducing its dependency on China, and will closely examine applications from German companies wanting to make investments in China to rule out human rights violations and forced labour in the supply chain. At the EU level, too, government subsidies to Chinese competitors who want to enter the domestic market should be looked at more closely.”

“Merkel's China policy is built on the core of safeguarding Germany's interests, especially in the economic and trade field. It cannot simply be abandoned and no leader dares to pay such a price.”

“Xi and Merkel's talk on Friday was not a surprise as the German leader is conducting farewell communications before stepping down later this month. And if it were not for the COVID-19 pandemic, she would definitely have visited China as she wants to preserve one of her political legacies - China-Germany ties - in the post-Merkel era in Germany.”

“The two countries have helped China and the EU to complete their investment agreement negotiations on schedule, and worked together to uphold multilateralism, safeguarded free trade, and actively dealt with climate change, working together to defend world peace and stability. The fundamental reason for the great achievements of China-Germany relations lies in the fact that the two countries respect each other, seek common ground while reserving differences, focus on win-win cooperation and pursue complementation of their respective advantages.”

“We have to uphold standards when there is dumping in other world regions. This could for instance take the form of a surcharge on companies that have been subsidised on the Chinese market or that are not subject to environmental standards.”

“Unlike the UK, which came to the South China Sea to boost its strategic role of 'Global Britain' after Brexit, Germany is acting more on behalf of Europe to seek a long-term maritime order and maintain a certain contact with China, but not confrontationally.”

“If the US and other Western countries decide to inflict greater and more substantial damage to Hong Kong or even China, such as totally destroying Hong Kong's status as an international financial center, they should be prepared to abandon a huge number of interests related to the city as such sanctions on trade or finance would just be like a nuclear attack triggering mutual assured destruction economically and financially. The US and UK are different from other Western countries and major EU members like France and Germany on this matter, because China's latest move did create huge losses for the US and UK in Hong Kong. Behind the pretext of 'democracy', the real reason why Washington and London are extremely anxious at this moment is that "their long-lasting plan and huge amount of input in Hong Kong - to breed pro-West proxies or opposition parties to gain political power through the problematic election system - is totally doomed. Other G7 members or major EU powers don't share their pain, so not every Western country desires to escalate their confrontation with China on Hong Kong, so the 'long fight' with the West on Hong Kong is, in fact, mainly with the US and the UK.”

“China is an important trading partner for Germany and we have strong economic ties which are in the interest of both sides. At the same time, we do not turn a blind eye on unequal investment conditions, aggressive appropriation of intellectual property, state-subsidised distortion of competition or attempts to exert influence by means of loans and investments.”

“The Hong Kong government’s decision to disqualify a dozen opposition candidates for the election and postpone the elections to the legislature is another infringement on the rights of the citizens of Hong Kong. We have repeatedly made our expectation clear that China lives up to its legal responsibilities under international law.”
