  • Oleksandr Kozachenko
Oleksandr Kozachenko “If we compare it with the beginning (of the Russian invasion), when we fired up to 100 shells a day, then now, when we fire 30 shells it's a luxury. Sometimes the number of shells fired daily is in single digits.” 7 hours ago

  • Catherine Russell
Catherine Russell “Over 200 days of war have already killed or maimed tens of thousands of children in Gaza. For hundreds of thousands of children in the border city of Rafah, there is added fear of an escalated military operation that would bring catastrophe on top of catastrophe for children. Nearly all of the some 600,000 children now crammed into Rafah are either injured, sick, malnourished, traumatised or living with disabilities.” 22 hours ago

The IPSEs are presented in chronological order based on when the IPSEs have been pronounced.

“We often pretend that China has a choice in terms of 'zero Covid' versus opening up. There never was a choice. The simple fact is that China is not ready for a wave on that scale.”

“We feel the same way about the problems everyone has raised and voiced. A lot of our work has not been enough, and there's still a big gap from everyone's expectations. We will do our best to improve. The epidemic prevention and control is now at the most critical moment, and we cannot tolerate the slightest slack.”

“The regime thinks it needs to maintain a 'zero Covid' policy to maintain its legitimacy. At a huge cost, though... Outbreaks have become so commonplace that it's really a non-event. But the Chinese authorities want to control any small potential source of instability.”

“Since the summit [Copenhagen Democracy Summit] is held in the name of democracy, I want to add a few things. Democracy is a common value pursued by all mankind, but there are various ways to realize it. And the democratic system of a country can only be determined by its own people. China practices a socialist democratic system, which has conformed to China's national conditions and has won wide support from its people. Take the handling of COVID-19 for example. The Chinese government rolled out the most 'hardcore' epidemic prevention and control measures, which turned out to have successfully curbed the virus spread and made China the first country to resume normal life. According to media reports, Chinese people's trust in the government reached 98 percent after the epidemic. By that, you can see what democracy looks like in China - it brings people joy and satisfaction. After 70 years of continuous efforts, the 1.4 billion Chinese people have all been lifted out of absolute poverty and I believe that ensuring its people have food to eat, houses to live in, and schools to attend, count as real democracy.”

“The [virus] situation in the mainland is so good, and places like my hometown in Ningxia [in Western China] there haven't been cases since long, long ago, so no one would really bother [getting vaccinated]. In a lot of cities there's very little chance to get infected, so they probably won't get the shot. For international students going abroad, maybe, but other people don't think it's necessary.”

“Most people in China remain susceptible to COVID-19, and elsewhere people already have antibodies and immunity, so then China will be in a very, very dangerous situation because if the virus is reintroduced, something like what happened in Wuhan might happen again. I'm not sure they can achieve [those vaccination rates] because I don't think they have a clear plan to vaccinate all of the Chinese people.”

“Throughout the year 2020, we have pooled every resource available and lost no time in delivering people-centered diplomacy. We have defied risks and danger to put up a firm line of defense for our fellow Chinese in every corner of the world. We overcame various difficulties to deliver more than 1.2 million health kits to overseas Chinese students, sent emergency medical supplies to overseas Chinese in 100-plus countries, and arranged over 350 special flights to bring home stranded Chinese nationals.”

“Given the uncontrollable factors like the novel coronavirus epidemic and trade wars, some of the quantitative targets might be missed. However, as we have been stressing, those figures [double the 2010 GDP in 2020 and average annual growth of 6.5 percent]do not matter anymore; what matters is that the trend for China to make progress in many areas, from economic growth and environmental protection to poverty alleviation, has not been disrupted by all these challenges.”

“The local authorities, they didn't like to tell the truth at that time. At the very beginning they kept silent, and then I said probably we have (a larger) number of people being infected. I didn't believe that result [41 cases for more than 10 days], so I (kept) asking and then, you have to give me the real number. I suppose they are very reluctant to answer my question.”
