  • Daoud Kuttab
Daoud Kuttab “Throughout this Israeli war on Gaza, there hasn't been a warning publicly made by the US that Israel has heeded. It is indeed unclear to what extent such warnings are just optics of putting pressure on the Israeli government while continuing to support its every move. In this sense, one should take with a grain of salt reports that the Biden administration is holding off one shipment of weapons to Israel to pressure it into halting the full-scale invasion of Rafah.” 14 hours ago
  • Bernie Sanders
Bernie Sanders “The US must now use ALL its leverage to demand an immediate ceasefire, the end of the attacks on Rafah, and the immediate delivery of massive amounts of humanitarian aid to people living in desperation. Our leverage is clear. Over the years, the United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Israel.” 15 hours ago
  • Lloyd Austin
Lloyd Austin “We've been very clear … from the very beginning that Israel shouldn't launch a major attack into Rafah without accounting for and protecting the civilians that are in that battlespace. We've not made a final determination on how to proceed with that shipment [of weapons].” 15 hours ago
  • Vuk Vuksanović
Vuk Vuksanović “This visit [Xi Jinping in Belgrade] shows that Serbia has exchanged Russia for China went it comes to its main partner to bargain with the West. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine placed the Serbo-Russian relationship under close monitoring, so the government sees a benefit in playing the Chinese card more often now since it's deemed to be less provocative. The Balkans, and Serbia in particular, have become even more interesting for China now that one branch of the Belt and Road Initiative through Russia and Belarus was effectively cut off with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.” 15 hours ago
  • Aleksandar Vucic
Aleksandar Vucic “I told him [Xi Jinping] that as the leader of a great power he will be met with respect all over the world, but the reverence and love he encounters in our Serbia will not be found anywhere else. When it comes to cooperation with Beijing, the sky is the limit.” 15 hours ago
  • Catherine Russell
Catherine Russell “Rafah is now a city of children, who have nowhere safe to go in Gaza. If large-scale military operations start, not only will children be at risk from the violence, but also from chaos and panic, and at a time where their physical and mental states are already weakened.” 19 hours ago
  • Hani Mahmoud
Hani Mahmoud “You cannot create a safe zone in a war zone. Every time people move from one place to another, they are in search of basic needs and … necessities that are becoming very hard to find right now.” 19 hours ago

“A visit to China by a group of 17 Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers is doing nothing regarding China's continuing military intimidation against Taiwan. The KMT members have become tools for Beijing's united front propaganda campaign. Beijing is manipulating Taiwan's parliament by using democracy to kill democracy. It is regretful that the 17 KMT lawmakers now in China are afraid to speak up for Taiwan, as we still face constant military threats from China and intimidatory gray zone tactics. We cannot see how the KMT's 'trip to promote peace and friendship' has achieved anything. Instead they are acting like sycophants by pandering to Chinese officials.”

“Between the morning of September 17th to 18th, the Ministry of National Defense had detected a total of 103 Chinese aircraft, which was a recent high and has posed severe challenges to the security across the Taiwan Strait and in the region.”

“We should be concerned. I don't think it's going to war overnight, but it is in a situation where you can have a mishap or a miscalculation and be in a very delicate situation. Washington has significantly boosted engagement with Taipei, China has increasingly tested Taiwan's air defenses and the government in Taipei has taken steps such as printing passports with the name Taiwan on them. All these moves raise suspicions and tensions and anxieties, and make it more likely that a mishap or miscalculation can happen. Everybody says the right thing, but if you look at what is happening it is not a static situation.”

“Chi [Chi Lin-liang] abetted China's psychological warfare against Taiwan and that the Ministry of National Defense's Political Warfare Bureau should take action against him. Such a comment would have been laughable if it came from an ordinary citizen, but not from the mouth of a retired general. Some retired military officers have made remarks about China that appeared to have been coordinated at a high level.”

“Any country can fly in the skies over the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Islands). Let them [the warplanes] come through - it's fine. Beijing's military drills near Taiwan are more frequent than the Ministry of National Defense has disclosed, but they should not be considered harassment of Taiwan.”

“We cannot continue 'business as usual' with China while the Chinese government sends near daily incursions into Taiwan's airspace, commits atrocities in the Uyghur Region and oversees the dismantling of Hong Kong's freedom and autonomy. There can be no further excuses for inaction. This G20, we need to see democracies find the courage and leadership that so far has been lacking.”

“What China is looking to do is to pressure Taiwan - to try and put down some red lines, some markers in the sand - and try to escalate a campaign of psychological warfare against the island and its leader Tsai Ing-wen.”

“It's not a thaw. It's not a re-embrace of engagement. It's about getting serious and systematic about competition. That means being very clear about boundaries, our perceptions of their behaviour, particularly the recent number of air force strike packages around Taiwan.”

“Taiwan must be on alert. China is more and more over the top. The world has also seen China's repeated violations of regional peace and pressure on Taiwan. Taiwan needs to strengthen itself and come together as one. Only then will countries that want to annex Taiwan not dare to easily resort to force. Only when we help ourselves can others help us.”
