  • Joe Biden
Joe Biden “It's a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. I am working on a deal to end the fighting and build a lasting and durable peace. Leadership is about fighting through the most intractable problem. It's about channeling anger, frustration and heartbreak to find a solution. It's about doing what you believe is right, even when it's hard and lonely.” 10 hours ago
  • Sylvain Ekenge
Sylvain Ekenge “An attempted coup d'etat has been put down by the defence and security forces. The attempt involved foreigners and Congolese. These foreigners and Congolese have been put out of action, including their leader.” 13 hours ago
  • Martin Griffiths
Martin Griffiths “When very, very experienced humanitarian aid workers, who have been in all kinds of places around the world for decades, when they go to Gaza - to help, to serve, to work - it is traumatising for them. So, God help what it must be for the people of Gaza. It is really difficult and it's getting worse daily. We meet with Israelis daily through COGAT, the committee set up for this purpose. We have many detailed discussions with them about security, about the movement of our trucks and convoys, about the priorities for fuel, but the fact of the matter is, we are not in a position to provide proper aid to the people of Gaza. Right now, it's not ever been quite as difficult as it is today. Much more can be done and ideally, obviously and hopefully this [Israeli military] operation needs to stop.” 13 hours ago

“China has been building a capacity over the last two decades to deny the US significant freedom of action in the western Pacific. That started with long-range anti-ship missiles, but now there is a growing naval capacity - and it has reached the point where the US is only viable because it has allies in the region.”

“China has long sought asymmetrical areas where they could exert influence in a way that didn't challenge US predominance and preeminence… It takes a lot of money, time and know-how to build a modern navy, but in cyberspace there's a lower threshold for having an impact.”

“The need for the world's biggest & best navy is clear: China already has a bigger navy than the US. While it's not nearly as advanced, Beijing is investing heavily. America can & must stay ahead of our adversaries when it comes to military strength because that's the key to peace.”

“We are currently only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Ten years from now, China is almost certainly going to have marine units deployed at locations all over the world. The Chinese Communist Party’s ambitions are global. Its interests are global. It plans to send military units wherever its global strategic interests require.”

“The Liaoning is too old to be a warship as its hull was built in 1985. China’s blue-water navy should be based on the new-generation carrier strike groups like Type 002, or even future Type 003 carriers, and other advanced warships. China has three fleets to take care of the Yellow Sea, East and South China seas, with each fleet demanding two aircraft carriers. Unlike the US Navy which has a global strategy, all China’s aircraft carriers can only be used for offshore defence because of China’s geographic location, where all neighbours keep a close eye on it.”
