Lauren Easton “The Associated Press decries in the strongest terms the actions of the Israeli government to shut down our longstanding live feed showing a view into Gaza and seize AP equipment. The shutdown was not based on the content of the feed but rather an abusive use by the Israeli government of the country's new foreign broadcaster law. We urge the Israeli authorities to return our equipment and enable us to reinstate our live feed immediately so we can continue to provide this important visual journalism to thousands of media outlets around the world.” 33 minutes ago
  • Itamar Ben-Gvir
Itamar Ben-Gvir “Israel should be the one that controls the Gaza Strip, unequivocally, and no one else. Most important is encouraging voluntary emigration of Palestinians from the enclave. Israel could then facilitate the return of settlements. I would love to live in Gaza if possible.” 53 minutes ago
  • Donald Tusk
Donald Tusk “An attempt to show that the prime minister of Israel and the leaders of terrorist organisations are the same, and the involvement of international institutions in this, is unacceptable.” 55 minutes ago
  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy
Volodymyr Zelenskiy “They [the Russian side] are always blocking everything, they will undermine the process, and they won't rest until they present us with their own plan for ending the war, which will inevitably be an ultimatum, as we have seen on many previous occasions. We can't hand the initiative over to them [...] Our agenda can't be dictated by Russia. This is a war against us, so there is justice in this. The goal of the summit is to come up, between Ukraine and its allies, with a joint stance on three key questions - and then to inform Russia of their position. If all countries support these three points, as I said, then a detailed step-by-step plan will be developed and presented to Russian representatives across different platforms that different countries have [...] Then Russia will have to contend with most of the world.” 1 hour ago
  • John Holman
John Holman “Few question his ongoing legitimacy and he [Zelenskyy] remains popular. Although lower than before, his approval rating's still above 60 percent. Many Ukrainians also feel an election would be unrealistic and disrupt the war effort. In a poll this March [2024], 78 percent of those asked said they were against elections before the end of the war. But in addition to that there's also the practical difficulties. Some Ukrainian towns are in ruins. Many power plants have been hit so there's rolling blackouts. And perhaps most importantly, there's 8 million people displaced, 5 million outside the country.” 1 hour ago
  • Janet Yellen
Janet Yellen “U.S. and European support for Ukraine has been essential for Ukraine's resistance to Russia's invasion. And let me be clear: It is also critical for the security of the American and European people. If we stand by as dictators violate territorial integrity and flout the international rules-based order, they have no reason to stop at their initial targets. They will keep going. The U.S. and Europe must show that Russia cannot outlast their resolve to defend a rules-based order that took them decades to shape. This includes the need to crack down on Russian sanctions evasion and provide Ukraine the funding to equip its military, fund critical government services and ultimately rebuild once the conflict ends. That's why I believe it's vital and urgent that we collectively find a way forward to unlock the value of Russian sovereign assets immobilized in our jurisdictions for the benefit of Ukraine. This will be a key topic of conversation during G7 meetings this week.” 22 hours ago
  • Antony Blinken
Antony Blinken “We reject the prosecutor's equivalence of Israel with Hamas. It is shameful.” 22 hours ago
  • Joe Biden
Joe Biden “The ICC prosecutor's application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders is outrageous. And let me be clear: Whatever this prosecutor might imply, there is no equivalence - none - between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security.” 22 hours ago
  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy
Volodymyr Zelenskiy “Western allies are taking too long to make key decisions , opens new tabon military support for Ukraine. Every decision to which we, then later everyone together, comes to is late by around one year. Russians are using 300 planes on the territory of Ukraine. We need at least 120, 130 planes to resist in the sky. You can't provide that right now? OK ... returning to the planes that you have on the territory of neighbouring NATO countries: raise them up ... shoot down targets, protect civilians. Can they do this? I'm sure that yes. Is this an attack by NATO countries, involvement? No.” 22 hours ago

“This operation is in response to the recent frequent release of wrong signals by the United States on the Taiwan issue. The US' bad actions and tricks are completely futile and very dangerous. Those who play with fire will burn themselves.”

“On the path of completely building a modern socialist country and realizing the second centennial goal, national defense and the military must be placed in a more important position, and the consolidation of national defense and a strong military must be accelerated. We must persist in strengthening the overall planning of war and make preparations for military struggle.”

“Ultimately, on the question of whether China will use force, Chinese leaders' perceptions of their chances of victory will matter more than their actual chances of victory. For that reason, it is bad news that Chinese analysts and officials increasingly express confidence that the PLA [People's Liberation Army] is well prepared for a military confrontation with the United States over Taiwan. Although Chinese strategists acknowledge the United States' general military superiority, many have come to believe that because China is closer to Taiwan and cares about it more, the local balance of power tips in Beijing's favor.”

“The entire army needs to strengthen its performance so as to do a good job of ensuring a good start to the 14th Five-Year Plan, and of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the party. The PLA [People's Liberation Army] had, during the course of 2020, strengthened military training and preparations for war ... and basically met its targets for national defense and military development for 2020. We should persist in using combat to guide our work; step up preparations for war ... as well as developing a top-level strategic deterrent and joint forces combat system. China's security situation is highly unstable and uncertain, and the whole army must be prepared to deal with a complicated situation at any time.”

“Maintaining a proper and steady increase in defense spending is needed to safeguard our sovereignty and development interests, fulfill China's international responsibility and obligations, and promote the transformation of the Chinese military with Chinese characteristics. China's defense expenditure is open and transparent. Each year, the defense budget is examined and approved by the NPC [National People's Congress] as part of the overall national budget, and in 2007, China started to report to the United Nations its military expenditures, including all the basic data of the previous fiscal year. We have done so each year ever since. When people look at whether a country poses a military threat to others, the key is what kind of defense policy the country pursues. In China's case, we are committed to the path of peaceful development. Our defense policy is defensive in nature. The efforts to strengthen our national defense do not target or threaten any other country.”

“The PLA ground forces want to play an active role in the Taiwan issue because so far their weapon systems are powerful enough to attack Taiwan without the help of missile force. Further evidence is that the PLA are also deploying the powerful Type PCL191 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) to the ground forces of the Eastern Theatre Command. The Taiwan Strait is just 180km across. The PCL191 rocket launchers are able to destroy all military bases and government buildings on the island accurately because the weapons were equipped with the BeiDou navigation satellite system.”

“We are currently only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Ten years from now, China is almost certainly going to have marine units deployed at locations all over the world. The Chinese Communist Party’s ambitions are global. Its interests are global. It plans to send military units wherever its global strategic interests require.”

“The Liaoning is too old to be a warship as its hull was built in 1985. China’s blue-water navy should be based on the new-generation carrier strike groups like Type 002, or even future Type 003 carriers, and other advanced warships. China has three fleets to take care of the Yellow Sea, East and South China seas, with each fleet demanding two aircraft carriers. Unlike the US Navy which has a global strategy, all China’s aircraft carriers can only be used for offshore defence because of China’s geographic location, where all neighbours keep a close eye on it.”

“If military action is chosen to unify Taiwan, landing capability is not just a psychological deterrent but will turn out to be an actual action. For any army in any country, this is a relatively difficult part of military training. It is necessary to increase training in this area to gain better capabilities, and only by doing this would we be able to ensure success in a future island seizure exercise.”

“Both the Pratas and Taiping Island in the Spratly chain have lost their geostrategic importance since the mainland developed eight artificial islands [in the South China Sea]. Beijing has three 3,000-metre airstrips on its man-made islands nearby, and they can each accommodate all kinds of [military and civilian] aircraft.”
