  • Rina Shah
Rina Shah “Protests in US universities are a display of democracy in action, a welcome sight in an election year marked by concerns of voter apathy chiefly due to Israel's war on Gaza. So when I see a movement like this of students taking peaceful, non-violent action and expressing their concern about the US government backing of Israel, of where our tax money is going, I think that's extremely healthy. These students are out there concerned about America's role in backing Benjamin Netanyahu. On the one hand, we are supplying weapons and funds to do what he wants to do in Gaza, while on the other we are sending humanitarian aid to Gaza. This is the hypocrisy these students are concerned about.” 15 hours ago
  • Thomas Friedman
Thomas Friedman “But revenge is not a strategy. It is pure insanity that Israel is now more than six months into this war and the Israeli military leadership - and virtually the entire political class - has allowed Netanyahu to continue to pursue a 'total victory' there, including probably soon plunging deep into Rafah, without any exit plan or Arab partner lined up to step in once the war ends. If Israel ends up with an indefinite occupation of both Gaza and the West Bank, it would be a toxic military, economic and moral overstretch that would delight Israel's most dangerous foe, Iran, and repel all its allies in the West and the Arab world.” 15 hours ago
  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy
Volodymyr Zelenskiy “Of course, I'm grateful to all of our partners who have helped us with air defence: each air defence system and each air defence missile is literally saving lives. It's important that everything works out as quickly as possible: every new agreement with our partners to strengthen our air defence, every initiative from Ukraine's friends to help us, particularly with finding and supplying Patriot [anti-aircraft missile systems]. Ukraine needs at least seven [Patriot] systems. Our partners have these Patriots. Russian terrorists can see that unfortunately our partners aren't as determined to protect Europe from terror as they are to do so in the Middle East. But [our partners] can give us the air defence systems that we need. We mustn't waste time: we need to signal determination.” 19 hours ago
  • Antony Blinken
Antony Blinken “I saw that Huawei just put out a new laptop that it boasted was AI capable, that uses an Intel chip. I think it demonstrates that what we're focused on is only the most sensitive technology that could pose a threat to our security. We're not focused on cutting off trade, or for that matter containing or holding back China.” 23 hours ago

“Chinese drones came in a pair and flew into the Kinmen area twice on Wednesday night, at about 9pm (13:00 GMT) and 10pm (14:00 GMT). “Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shown again these regimes will stop at nothing in the pursuit of expansionist goals. As we watch images from half a world away of atrocities committed against another democracy on the frontlines of authoritarian expansionism, I would like to stress that, like Ukraine, Taiwan will not bend to pressure.”

“There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The current situation across the Taiwan Strait faces a new round of tension. The root cause is that the Taiwan authorities have repeatedly tried to seek 'Taiwan independence' by soliciting US support, while some in the US intend to contain China with the Taiwan question. The US and Taiwan have colluded with each other, and certain individual deliberately draws parallel between Taiwan and Ukraine despite they are two fundamentally different issues. Their aim is to mislead the public and profit from that. It is such move of playing with fire that would change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwan question is a legacy of the Chinese civil war. China must and will be reunified. We will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts. That being said, we reserve the option of taking all necessary measures in response to the interference of foreign forces and the secessionist activities of a handful of 'Taiwan independence' separatists. The so-called 'Taiwan Relations Act' unilaterally concocted by the US side runs counter to the principles of the three China-US joint communiqués and basic norms governing international relations. China has been firmly opposed to it since the very beginning. The US has no right to put its domestic law above international law, still less use it as a pretext to meddle in China's internal affairs. On the Taiwan question, the US should abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, not the so-called 'Taiwan Relations Act'. The US should abide by the one-China principle and stipulations in the three China-US joint communiqués, cut off official interactions and military ties with Taiwan, stop arms sales to Taiwan and take concrete actions to fulfill its commitment of not supporting 'Taiwan independence'.”

“Once the National Congress of the Communist Party of China is over in the fall of 2022, the scenario of armed unification will move toward becoming a reality. It is very likely that the leadership will move toward armed unification by 2027, the 100th anniversary of the PLA's [People's Liberation Army] founding.”

“We are willing to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification. But if 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces continue to provoke and coerce, or even cross any red line, we will have to take decisive measures. The pursuit of independence will only throw Taiwan into a deep chasm and bring about profound catastrophe.”

“We must remind the Beijing authorities to not misjudge the situation and to prevent the internal expansion of 'military adventurism'. Authorities in Beijing should stop the spread of military adventurism within their ranks. The use of military means is absolutely not an option for resolving the differences between our two sides. To ease tension in the region, both Taipei and Beijing must work hard to take care of people's livelihoods and calm the hearts of the people in order to find peaceful solutions to problems together. We will hold fast to our sovereignty, uphold the values of freedom and democracy, defend territorial sovereignty and national security, and maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”

“Looking forward, Beijing may intensify efforts to interfere in Taiwan's politics over the next two years. Even though China's leaders are facing headwinds, they still have bandwidth and incentive to try to create a political environment in Taiwan conducive to their preferences for the 2024 election. Beijing almost surely will seek to create disfavor for candidates it opposes and tailwinds for candidates that support its vision for the development of cross-Strait relations.”

“The mainland encourages and supports normal business exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, and protects the legitimate rights and interests of Taiwan compatriots and companies in accordance with the law. However, no one or company is allowed to sabotage cross-Straits relations by providing financial aid to secessionists while making money on the mainland. This attitude is clear and consistent, and Taiwan companies investing in the mainland are well aware of it. There is no room for ambiguity about whether to adhere to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, and whether to oppose or support secessionists.”

“It is inappropriate for China to link legal matters with politics. The episode could be worrisome for Taiwanese businesspeople. Far Eastern has made donations to not only the DPP, but also to the KMT [Kuomintang] and other parties. This is what it has to do, but it doesn't necessarily mean it supports Taiwanese independence.”

“The current sanction is restricted to Far Eastern Group, and its magnitude does not seem overly costly. “The general public on the mainland is getting increasingly impatient with the actions of Taiwan secessionists that have been dissipating our energy. And the voices that demand the country's reunification by force are getting louder and louder. The US and the secessionist forces in Taiwan must understand that no matter whether Beijing sends its military aircraft over the island, shoots down some of Taiwan's warplanes, or sends a ship to ram a provocative US warship, it will surely be welcomed by the people on the mainland. The government of the mainland has already been authorized by its people in advance to punish Taiwan secessionists by force.”
