Itamar Yaar “The American move to pause big bomb transfers is largely symbolic. But it's a sign of trouble and could become more of a problem if it is sustained. It's not some kind of American embargo on American munitions support, but I think it's some kind of diplomatic message to Mr Netanyahu that he needs to take into consideration American interests more than he has over the last few months. It's kind of a signal, a 'be careful'.” 13 hours ago
  • Vitalii Barabash
Vitalii Barabash “Around 700 people stayed in Avdiivka. The situation is not easy; regular checks are ongoing. The excitement of the majority of those who remained and waited for the Russians has long faded. Even those who didn't care admit now that it was far better under Ukraine's control. Because there is no evidence of democracy or that it was 'liberators' that came to them.” 15 hours ago
  • Alan Boswell
Alan Boswell “The Sudanese have basically been forgotten, obviously there's the war in Gaza which has taken a lot of attention. Frankly it would take very high-level political focus on trying to pressure those who are arming the various sides and have the actual belligerence themselves to stop this. Obviously, the United Nations tools are not very functional.” 17 hours ago
  • Benjamin Netanyahu
Benjamin Netanyahu “No amount of pressure … will stop Israel from defending itself and achieving its war objectives. Eighty years ago in the Holocaust, the Jewish people were totally defenceless against those who sought our destruction. No nation came to our aid. I pledge here today from Jerusalem on this Holocaust Remembrance Day: If Israel is forced to stand alone, Israel will stand alone. But we know we are not alone because countless decent people around the world support our just cause.” 20 hours ago
  • Vladimir Putin
Vladimir Putin “We know what the exorbitance of such ambitions leads to. Russia will do everything to prevent a global clash. But at the same time, we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic forces are always in a state of combat readiness.” 20 hours ago

Albania's path to join EU

Page with all the IPSEs stored in the archive related to the Context Albania's path to join EU.
The IPSEs are presented in chronological order based on when the IPSEs have been pronounced.

“Greece is a precious neighbor, a historical and stable friend, an important partner of Albania on the path to democracy, progress and European integration. The cooperation between our two countries is strategic and we are determined for it to continue to be strengthened in the spirit of good neighborhoodness, for the benefit of our common interests, close partnership in NATO and a common European perspective. Albania is grateful to Greece for the great, clear and determined support of the European integration process, the opening of negotiations and we are convinced that we have this support for holding the first Intergovernmental Roundtable during the Slovenian Presidency, within December 2021. Countries connect the two strong bridges of friendship: the Greek minority in Albania, which enjoys all the rights enjoyed by Albanian citizens and the community of Albanian emigrants in Greece, which constitute the largest community of foreigners and for thirty years contribute for their families, for the economies and welfare systems of both countries.”

“Delays in the official start of membership negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia have a negative impact on the credibility of the EU. The pending bilateral issues between Bulgaria and North Macedonia should be resolved as a matter of priority. It is essential that EU Member States conclude discussions on the Negotiating Frameworks without further delay and that the first intergovernmental conferences with both countries be held as soon as possible and before the end of this year. Albania has achieved tangible results in judicial reform and the fight against crime, results have been achieved in the fight against corruption and crime. Macedonia has made progress in the reforms imposed by the EU, it has been determined in the fight against crime and corruption, this fight must continue.”

“This is great timing for this topic and our gathering. However, we have to be honest and open – it is the worst time possible. For the second time, Bulgaria vetoed the accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania. It has been two decades since we started the talks with the EU. We do not know whether to expect it anymore. If the EU cannot make a difference in the region, which is not even its backyard, but its courtyard, it is telling about the problem the EU faces. The long-term consequence will be the weakening of those who believe in the transformative process of the enlargement and in European values.”

“Germany supports EU Presidency's objective to hold first accession conferences with both Albania and North Macedonia in June. Both countries have delivered on required reforms – now EU has to deliver, too. Further delay undermines EU credibility, stability in the region.”

“While it is uncertain that North Macedonia and Albania will progress this year, I would think the odds are good. After Bulgarian elections (scheduled for March) there will be a chance to find a face-saving way out for Bulgaria. However, if that opportunity is missed, the risk will be that the veto 'settles in' and becomes harder to challenge in the subsequent period.”

“I look forward to discussions with member states and holding as soon as possible the first Intergovernmental Conference with the two countries. Their future is clear in the European Union, and I am confident that they will continue to implement reforms on their path to the EU, as they have done so far.”
