“[The UN envoy to Sudan] believes pressure from others is important. The African Union, regional grouping IGAD, Arab League, all of these bodies are talking with various players and in particular with the two generals, trying to get a ceasefire in place. There's talk of mediation missions … making their way as delegations to try to speak to the generals to try to get that ceasefire. The problem with that - airspace is closed, borders are closed and it's simply too dangerous for them to travel at this stage. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but they're not bearing much fruit this time and clearly that's deeply concerning for the people of Sudan.”

“There are many who welcomed the announcement but there are others who raised questions whether this would be a problem for diplomacy going forward. Now you have the head of state of Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, who is now a wanted man by the ICC. This is going to be a headache for some of those who are going to have to deal with President Putin. How are other countries going to deal with him? Will President Putin be able to travel? Will the UN meet a man who is now wanted with an arrest warrant for him to be sent to The Hague?”

“The first meeting here is NATO looking at the military part of this. Looking at support for Ukraine, but also looking at beefing up NATO's forces for those countries close to Russia. Certainly, there's been a 10-fold increase in land forces from the situation that was there before and 100,000 US troops have been sent to Europe. So that's a very, very big boost. At the European Union summit, I think more of the focus will be on sanctions, as will the meeting with the G7 leaders. The Japanese prime minister, not a member of NATO, and the other members of G7 will be flying in for that meeting.”

Putin has been in power for over 2 decades so you are not going to change how he operates, or how he runs Russia. What you can try and do is to manage that relationship. What the Russians always want is to maintain a seat at the talk table. they are permanent UN Security Council members and they are proud of that. Putin seems very comfortable in that position and it seems he likes the recognition that sitting down with Biden gives him.”

“[It is] exceedingly rare for an ambassador [Kyaw Moe Tun] to the United Nations to speak out against events in their own country. This may well spur some members of the General Assembly to take a slightly tougher position. The General Assembly doesn't have real teeth but it certainly amplifies a message and may well also give a little bit of a prod to the other key organ of the United Nations, the one that does have the teeth – the United Nations Security Council. The place to watch is China, which of course is a permanent member of the UNSC. Perhaps what we've seen today in the General Assembly might force China to take a little bit of a stronger stand on this.”
