“The neutralization of Nasrallah in particular could end up actually swelling the ranks of Hezbollah. While crushing the morale of the organization's supporters was probably one of Israel's goals behind the assassination, Nasrallah's status as an idol amongst his followers may actually galvanize those who support Hezbollah but are nonetheless not active members to seek to join its ranks given their thirst for revenge. Should such a scenario play out, Israel's assassination may turn out to be a strategic miscalculation.”

“I spoke to a Hezbollah source earlier, and he said that it's likely, it's possible that Hezbollah will not announce who is the next leader for quite some time for a simple fact I think that if it does, then that successor would also be subject to an attack and a possible assassination. Just recently, I think it was yesterday, the new commander of the Radwan forces was assassinated by Israel just a few days after he was appointed, following the assassination of his predecessor. So I think that Hezbollah has to address these gaps and this apparent infiltration or compromise which has taken place within its ranks before it can clearly declare who is in fact going to occupy those senior positions within this party. So I think it's quite likely that Hezbollah will try and address the situation, fill in the gaps in the most secretive way possible so as to avoid those vulnerabilities which Israel could easily take advantage of, particularly given the very formidable intelligence capabilities which we've seen Israel use in this latest round of escalation.”

Indeed, we are witnessing significant blows-painful blows. But if Israel does want to completely eliminate Hezbollah, these kinds of operations won't be enough. That would require, in the end, a ground invasion, and I think in that particular realm, Hezbollah does have significant strengths over Israel.”

“Iran will probably not opt for an all-out escalation against Israel because that would play to Israel's advantages. Iranians have proven to be rather strategic and also at the same time, rather pragmatic thinkers. You are going to see the usual Iranian approach of trying to weaken the Israeli side via proxy. Hezbollah still possesses significant military capabilities and there were also Iran's allies in Yemen and Iraq that could be used by Iran. It has been Benjamin Netanyahu's dream for so long, since maybe the beginning of his political career, to fight Iran to the very last American and I don't think the Iranians are ready to grant him that wish.”

I think that it's possible the Israeli side figures that taking out the military brains of Hezbollah might facilitate Hezbollah's defeat in a way we didn't see in 2006. Iran will probably not opt for an all-out escalation against Israel because that would play to Israel's advantages. Iranians have proven to be rather strategic and also at the same time, rather pragmatic thinkers. You are going to see the usual Iranian approach of trying to weaken the Israeli side via proxy. Hezbollah still possesses significant military capabilities and there were also Iran's allies in Yemen and Iraq that could be used by Iran. It has been Benjamin Netanyahu's dream for so long, since maybe the beginning of his political career, to fight Iran to the very last American and I don't think the Iranians are ready to grant him that wish.
